Select the option on the mail/accounts -> server config page,

Checked on linux buildid:2001-03-14-21 commercial build. This is working as it
should. I have my settings to check for new messages for every two minutes.
This retrieved messages for both pop and imap
worksforme.
Reporter,
Download one of the recent trunk builds and try this again.
Just make sure when you change 'check periodically for new messages [] minutes'
you exit and launch the application always for the changes to take place.
In case of an imap account, when the new messages arrive you will see the green
arrow appear at the account level as well the inbox and downloads the message.
In case of pop if you have the preference 'automatically download messages from
the server'unchecked, the messages are not downloaded automatically as soon as
you recive it unless you manually do get message.

Checked on 2001-03-21-08 on linux. Worksforme. For now marking this worksforme
because have not heard from the reporter nor I can see this problem on the
commercial trunk build.
cc-ing Asa to see if this is mozilla only and if so reopen

I did a pull from CVS on 03/24/01 and my problem is not fixed. Under the
Mail/News Account Settings dialog -> Server settings, I disable both Check
for new mail on startup and Check for new mail every N minutes, then exit
mozilla, then restart and turn on both checks (the later for every 5 minutes),
and mozilla doesn't do *either* the initial mail check nor the every five
minute check. I must get mail manually.
Btw, there are no little green download arrows nor threading icons to the
left of the messages in the list (overview?) pane. Threading seems to have
gone awry also. Messages from mail lists I'm on that should be threaded are
not recognized as threaded. Clicking on the threaded column header in the
list pane only reverses the current order (date?).
I've built the source here and can rebuild with extra debug if that will
help. Use duanev@interactivesi.com to contact me here at work.

Reporter,
Based on your comments below it looks like after you changed the biff setting to
5 minutes you should again restart the application for it to work. If you don't
then it is still your first setting that you had unchecked to check messages
every N minutes. So every time you change the settings you should always
restart for biff to work.
Your second paragraph has nothing to do with this problem and please open a
seperate bug for the threading problem. Please do not combine two bugs in one.
Try to restart the application and see if your biff settings work. You have not
mentioned if this is a pop or an imap account. If you have this as a pop account
make sure you also have the preference 'automatically download any new messages'
also checked. Also I would download most recent build and try this again.
Because this still worksforme on commercial build-2001-03-26-06 on linux running
Red hat 6.2 release

Ugh, I am sufficiently shamed. Download new messages was not checked.
Restarting mozilla doesn't fix this! <8}
I don't recall any biff notifications for new mail, but then I was only
looking for new messages to automatically appear in the message list pane.
I will open a new bug on the missing threading icons et. al.
I appoligize for the waste of bandwidth.
(ps. where IS the biff notification? Is it that itsy bitsy green arrow
that appears in the mail tab in the very bottom left of each window?)

Reporter,
Yes it is the biff arrow that you see when mail arrives. Just keep in mind
when ever you change the biff settings in accounts and settings just close the
application completely and restart. It should work fine.
Please do not open another new bug for the icons that has been missing. This has
been fixed now and download 2001-03-28 any build and you will be fine.
Per your comments I am verifying this bug.
