The rationale here is that if you're really looking to browse more of these top sites, when we take you to the awesomescreen we should obscure half of them below the keyboard. People can tap the url field if they want to search/go.

I think that this issue is no longer valid since Bug 798515 has landed on m-c

Agree with comment 6. I just filed Bug 921467 for similar considerations in the new layouts.
