According to
http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/adb.html
You should be able to do
$ adb shell stop
$ adb shell setprop log.redirect-stdio true
$ adb shell start
To redirect stdout/stderr. But I played with that and it didn't seem to fix this.
