Details

From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux 2.4.2 i686; en-US; 0.8.1) Gecko/20010307
BuildID: 2001030714

On the Download dialog box, the checkbox at the bottom that states "Always ask
me before opening or saving files of this type" always seems to be disabled when
I am downloading a file with an unknown mime type.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Go to http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/latest/.
2. Click a file to initiate a download.
3. The "Downloading" dialog box appears, with the "Save to disk" radio button
selected.
4. Look at the checkbox at the bottom. It's disabled.
5. Click the "Open using" radio button and choose a helper app.
6. The checkbox is still disabled.

Actual Results: The checkbox stays disabled, no matter which option you choose,
and regardless of whether or not you manually choose a helper app to open the
file with.

Expected Results: The checkbox should enable itself after the user selects to
"save" or "open using". Additionally, if the user chooses to clear the checkbox,
meaning "never ask me before opening or saving files of this type," Mozilla
should remember that setting and create an appropriate helper app type or "save
as" preference for that specific mime type. IE will do this in Windows, but NS4
does not give you the option.

It appears that if the user has predefined a helper app for that mime type, but
left the "always ask me" checkbox selected, Mozilla *will* allow you to change
the preference using the "always ask me" checkbox on the "Downloading" dialog box.

If this turns into a "wontfix" issue, perhaps the checkbox and text, instead of
being disabled, could disappear altogether to prevent confusion and frustration
on the user's part.
It's likely a temp feature or smth, but I, too, would like to see it fixed. I
configured xmms to play *.mp3 but I would like it to start playing without first
asking me which app I would like to use.
