Details

There are two parts of this work 1. Support for fixing the screen to a particular orientation, firing the right events to force gecko reflow, and rendering to the framebuffer correctly. 2. Listening to sensor events to decide which orientation to choose. Bug 673922 is related but will build on this work.
Is this similar to the "lock screen" feature on Android? In some Android device there is a physical key for swiching to lock screen. When lock screen is switched, the screen orientatio will be kept on that moment.
