Latest build, 2001031008, all OSs.

We're missing tooltips for the mail and menu grippies on the main toolbars.

Changing the summary...

Original Summary: Tooltips needed for the mail toolbar grippies and menu toolbar
grippies in the main mail window.

New Summary: 3pane tooltips needed for the pane seperators and menu toolbar

Even though I've included these, (which give us the throbber's tooltip text),
they don't give us the vendorShortName.

Seth, any ideas why not?

+<!ENTITY % navigatorDTD SYSTEM "chrome://navigator/locale/navigator.dtd" >

Jennifer, I looked at the specs (for the 3 pane mail window overview, that is)
and I'm not seeing where tooltips are defined for each widget, etc. Marlon says
they should never be on the collapse/expand widgets on the toolbars (yet I
re-implemented these for browser without complaints.) What is the right thing
to do here? Also, do we really need tooltips for the pane splitters? Thanks.
Don't make us have tooltips on separators/splitters - it's wasted effort,
unnecessary code and just bloated. Please...
Cc'ing Robin. Robin, is someone in the tech pubs group keeping track of
tooltips? Are you guys following any rules for when tooltips appear and when
they don't? We should be consistent within the product. Thanks.
Stephend or Jglick, tell me *one* reason you would need a tooltip on a splitter?
We don't have this throughout the app (I just checked) and if we would have it,
it would only indicate that the widget itself isn't self-explanatory enough as
to what it does.

What if we had tooltips on all buttons, saying that you could click them and
what they did? Isn't that supposed to be self-explanatory already?

I'm questioning why this bug was ever filed. Stephend, do you honestly think
that one needs a tooltip on "grippies"? And if so, why should we have it
specifically in mail/news when the rest of the app does fine without it?

I would like to hear your thoughts here.

I strongly suggest WONTFIX. Thanks.
My recommendations: No tooltips for the pane separators. However, I see the need
for the following new tooltips in the main mail window:

"Menu bar" tooltip for menu bar expand/collapse widget
"Mail toolbar" tooltip for mail button bar expand/collapse widget

Also, the offline/online indicator in the main mail window is missing it's
tooltip. It should have the same text as the browser's offline/online indicator
tooltip -- "You are <online/offline>. Click the icon to work <offline/online>."
(This tooltip is spec'd in the Offline spec.)
Hakan's right.

If the grippies and splitters aren't obvious enough already, you should file
that as a bug in the Themes Component.

If the grippies and splitters ever get tooltips, I will file that as a bug in
the Component of UI Redundancy Component.

Hwaara, navigator has it, so I'm trying to maintain consistency. If it doesn't
belong in the browser either, I can rip those out.

And, at the very least, I should do the offline indicator (as that is surely not
indicative of its function, by icon alone)
Hmm..the offline indicator is hard (because the tooltip text for it is dynamic,
using broadcasters).  See

Jglick, Seth or Stephend can any of you read mine and mpt's comments again?

I, and assumingly mpt too, are suggesting this as a wontfix, so please don't
resume your work on it, stephend.
My patch doesn't apply anymore, and I've got better things to work on ;-)

I agree, grippies and splitters shouldn't need tooltips.
So, I think we all agree about that. Right? I'll just go ahead and do something
illegal, I'll wontfix this bug since the UI person in mailnews, I and the
contributor to this bug seems to feel the same way.

The bug which is blocking this should be wontfixed accordingly.

Phew.

Fine with me, file a bug to remove the tooltips in Navigator's grippies (against
me or Ben) then.
