Steps to reproduce:

Running Mai & Newsgroups as usual


Actual results:

No sounds when new mail arrives.  One can trigger the chosen sound to play by clicking on the "Play" button in Preferences ... Notifications, but the sound does NOT play when the mail client checks the server and finds new messages waiting.  It does, however, display the visual notification _briefly_ in the Linux tab and the icon at the lower left in the Component Bar changes.  It also plays the the sound AFTER one downloads the message(s) from the server, but that is essentially USELESS, because the user is already aware that messages are there and playing the sound afterward is an ANNOYANCE.


Expected results:

The Mail & News client should play the sound every time it checks the server for new messages and finds new messages waiting, as determined by the Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings ... Server Settings .... "Check for new messages at startup" AND "Check for new messages every xx minutes" selections.  That is, every time the visual mail indicator pops up in the Linux tab or Windows tray, it should trigger the notification sound.

This was fixed in earlier versions of SeaMonkey but was again broken around release 2.3/2.4

Could you confirm in which 2.3.x or 2.4.x version this regression happened?

Should be fixed by Bug 635918. Please DUP this if the next nightly trunk build fixes this issue.
