The thumbnails on about:home and in the tabs menu look different for the same website, because they use a different crop size. I haven't found any rationale for this behavior, and I'm thinking this might also cause some kind of overhead. In my eyes the same thumbnail should be used for both... (the best crop size can be determined in bug 709844)
The thumbnails for about:home are taken from DB. Hence the thumbnail stored here is different from the thumbnail shown in the Tab menu.
I don't know the technical details, I just would have guessed, that the thumbnail that is generated for the tab menu would also be stored in the DB for use on about:home. But even if the thumbnail has to be generated separately for both use cases I still would expect that they should at least be cropped the same way. After all the thumbnail is a visual indicator for the website... having different thumbnails for the same website gives users an unnecessarily hard time identifying the site.
