(Whiteboard: [passwords:master-password])

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.0; rv:9.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/9.0.1
Build ID: 20111220165912

Steps to reproduce:

started firefox

Actual results:

the master password entry box appears two or three times, and often fails to accept my password because a new box opens and grabs focus while typing in the first box.

Expected results:

The master password box should appear once at startup and go away once you have successfully entered your password.
Do you open multiple tabs automatically on Firefox start (session restore)?
No, it seems to happen with single windows or tabs. It also happens in both Win Vista and Ubuntu. I am not sure about 7, but I will try to check when I get home.
It may also be due to Firefox Sync, I use it on all my computers. Perhaps there is some unintended synergy between the two?
did it happen on Firefox 10?

Does the issue still occur if you start Firefox in Safe Mode? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode

How about with a new, empty profile? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Basic%20Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile
It does happen in 10, but so far does not happen in safe mode. I will try a new empty profile as soon as I can, thanks!
so far I have not been able to duplicate the error while in safe mode, but I have not had a chance to try the empty profile yet.
Maybe one of extension is causing this issue..disable one by one extension manually and check which extension causing the problem
Actually, I am not sure that is it. The same thing happens on my linux box (Ubuntu 11.10) and I have no add-ons installed.
Thats a bug that annoyed me for years. I had it on windows and all ubuntu linux versions since 2009.

STEPS:
1. Create Master Password
2. restart firefox
3. master password entry window opens
4. wait a few seconds
5. next window opens, and the next, and the next

It does not matter if there are one or several tabs open that use stored logins, as far as I know. It happend without Sync and it happens with Sync.

Expected: There should simply be a method to check if prompt is already open.

This is happening for me as well. I am using Firefox 29 on Windows 8.1. I always have multiple tabs open when I open the browser from my previous session. I have managed to get this to stop happening by disabling the add-on Clearly 10.1.1.2 from Evernote. The new problem is that it does not ask for a master password right after starting Firefox. It waits until I go to an add on that requires a password that is saved or try to get into the passwords area of the options menu. I assume that this is expected and more secure behaviour but I did like entering the password at start up and not only after accessing certain features.
Hi, Firefox should check, if the window "Passwort erforderlich" (de-de) is already open or not.
Something like this:
If window "Passwort erforderlich" not exist, then open window "Passwort erforderlich", else goto next step.
I have this issue on latest Thunderbird. On every start, I am beeing asked for the master password exactly 3 times. It started happening after some update a few months ago. Before, this worked correctly for years. I am not sure if I should post here or create a new bug for Thunderbird?
