Umlaute are not displayed at all or displayed correctly (e.g. "ü", see screenshots). This applies not only to webpages but the to the whole ui of Firefox.

Firefox is working fine on my desktop and on my Android smartphone. It seems to be either a problem with Android 4.0 or the specific version on ASUS Eeepad Transformer Prime.
This is a Fennec XUL issue based on screenshot. Can you try testing Fennec Native to see what behavior you get? Also, i noticed you have times new roman font.. can you try your default font and see if you can reproduce?

FWIW i tried heise.de on my galaxy nexus, 1-30-2012 Native nightly built, and umlauts load fine.

Where do I get Fennec Native? The version I have installed is "Firefox" from the Android market. I tried searching for "Fennec" but did not find another version of Firefox/Fennec. "Firefox beta" from the market has the same isssue.

I did not change the font and tried to change it even before I posted this issue. How would I change it to a default Android font? Maybe the fonts Asus Transformer Prime uses are different from the fonts on all (most) other devices and that is causing the problem?

On my HTC Desire with Firefox 9 they are fine as well.
It is a new version of Firefox coming to Beta on the Android Market in the next few days. Currently, you can try out Nightly @ http://nightly.mozilla.org/ (Mobile on Android) to try out the new version.

The issue persists in the current nightly (12.0a1, 2012-01-31). I used the version straight from http://nightly.mozilla.org and did not install any plugins or change any settings.

Thanks for checking Matthias. Can you attach a new screenshot again of the issue on the latest nightly? Also, bonus credit if you can attach a logcat of the issue when loading the page with the busted umlauts. (easiest way is to download alogcat from Market, and run that while reproducing the issue)
I attached the files you requested. If you need anything else, please let me know.
Today my Asus Transformer TF01 (not the prime; the previous model) received a firmware update to Ice Cream Sandwich (android 4.0); Android also reports running this on his prime.

While my Transformer was at 3.0 Firefox had no problems with fonts. But now I notice the same problems:

* wrong font in user interface, same one as Matthias.

* Also wrong this font in some web pages, such as www.google.com and news.bbc.co.uk.

* non-functional umlaute in web pages (I am using the English UI)

* some weirdness with quote marks as well in some places; I suspect when smart quotes are in use.

* possibly unrelated it also appeared somewhat slower to switch between tabs than on Android 3.x; this seemed to depend on which tabs were loaded though.

Like Matthias I did not change any font settings. I tried to wipe Firefox's settings entirely to see whether that resolved the problem, as today I also received a Firefox update I think, but that didn't fix the issue.

I also downloaded Aurora 13 today and it appears to have no font issues.

So I think it's clear that Android 4.0 is somehow involved, given that it also happens on the previous model.

It's strange though that you haven't gotten more reports from people running the Android Transformer TF01 though, as I think I'm on the tail end of the Android 4.0 rollout for that device.
Uh, I said 'Android also reports' in the first paragraph, but I meant to say Matthias also reports he's running Android 4.0 on his Transformer Prime tablet.
I have the same problem on my Asus Transformer TF101 like Martijn following the Asus pushed update from Android 3.x to 4 on the 19Mar2012. The symptoms are the same as described by Matthias.
I did not touch the Firefox installation, 'only' the OS changed. The Firefox update on 20Mar2012 did not change this situation.
Opera Mobile is not affected by the OS change, nor (no surprise) is the Android browser.
There seems to be another reference to this in the Help section in:
support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/921793.
Sadly currently without a solution.

Maybe somebody can update the help section entry to also refer to the Asus Transformer TF101 after the Android 4 update. I do not know how to do that.
I resolved the problem of Umlaute not showing and wrong serife font showing only in Firefox but not other browsers on my Asus Transformer TF101 following the update to Android 4 by:

Clearing the data of my Firefox installation, then uninstalling it. Power down, then power up again, then installed the Firefox Beta from the Android Market date 20Apr2012.

Maybe somebody can test this on the TF201 too and report accordingly and then also update the Help entry referred to in my previous post.

I am seeing a similar issue for all accented characters on the Asus Transformer TF101 running Android 4.0.3 on Firefox 10.0.5 ESR candidate build 1. The issue is reproducible with fonts in the Firefox settings screens and on web pages (google.ro - romanian version of google). In both situations the accented characters are not displayed at all. I will change the title of the bug to cover all characters.
Summary: Umlaute are not displayed or not displayed correctly on Android 4.0 (ASUS Eeepad Transformer Prime) → Accented characters are not displayed or not displayed correctly on ASUS Eeepad Transformer Prime running Android ICS
