For FF11 Android, I was thinking we could do a fun functional Snippet on the GA channel that would let users ReTweet (Twitter) or Share (Facebook) a pre-written promo message right from the Snippet.

What are you thoughts? Who should we get a security consult from?

Thanks!

Hi Jaclyn - I like this concept. A couple of questions/comments we should address before we begin any sort of implementation:

1. What would roughly the snippet text, Twitter text, and Facebook share text say? Can you give us more of an idea around this experience? Maybe some sample copy about what you're thinking?

2. If you show this to GA users, most of them will not be aware that we make a mobile browser for Firefox, so I'm not sure how motivated they'll be to share that for us. Thoughts? I realize a lot of this depends on the execution/larger campaign messaging, so let's flesh that out first.

We've done cool things like this before, like the Tweet machine campaign, so I'm optimistic something like this could work, I just want to make sure we match the right message with the right channel. Thanks! (Cc-ing Jane to that extent)

(Also Cc-ing Chrissie since she's working on a social media widget project)

Something along the lines of...
The all new faster, sleeker Firefox for Android is here! Learn how Firefox can upgrade your Android browsing experience _link_ #wittyhashtag [RT button][FB Share button]

Good point - However since most of the mobile users right now are on the GA channel, I think a lot of them would be on GA desktop as well. I'm thinking we should probably use a "learn more" CTA than a "download right-off-the-bat" CTA for these users who might not be aware. How does that sound?

Thank you!
Or!...how about a Twitter sweepstakes (will also need to clear w/ legal) that has a message like:

The all new faster, sleeker Firefox for Android is here! Let's upgrade the Android browsing experience _link_ RT for a chance to win a t-shirt [RT button]
Got the general idea, thanks! Sweepstakes notion aside, it looks like this would be adding social sharing super-powers to our usual snippet, which is awesome, and it wouldn't be the primary CTA.

Chrissie - is there anything we should know about the widget project that could affect this?

Mkelly - can you give a technical "this can" or "this can't" be done stamp?

Also looping in Corey from IT here too.
This *should* be technically possible, but the Facebook part in particular has huge privacy concerns. I believe that, currently, Facebook share buttons violate our privacy policy.

wenzel and/or cmore: Would this snippet suffer the same issues that we're having with twitter and facebook buttons on our websites, and has someone come up with a solution yet?
Weighing in briefly, and setting this as depends on Bug 701759 where we're solving the problems @mkelly mentions in comment 5

Jaclyn love the ideas in here!

Yes. Though if we don't want fancy share counts or similar, we could just make those buttons regular links? For an example of what I am talking about, head over to <https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/demos/detail/rob-in-soundland>, click on "share", then hover over the twitter/FB links to see where they're pointing. Those links are privacy-neutral.

In addition, I have no idea how the regular Twitter/Facebook buttons would behave on an in-product page. Might be a non-issue, but this bug is not really about a "share this page!" functionality, while bug 701759 is.

That's a very appealing solution - I don't think we need fancy share counts, so a privacy-neutral option would be great.

Jaclyn - will something like the example above work for you?

Good distinction, thanks.
I like the solution of buttons as regular links! Let's use something like that, unless someone has another solution.

Laura - Would the tracking on this be tricky?

+1 to using the regular links here.

> Laura - Would the tracking on this be tricky?

Our Metrics team should be able to search the Twitter firehose for public tweets that include a particular link or keywords and we can count shares that way. Jaclyn, I suggest you check with Metrics to confirm. Laura can give more info on tracking from a Snippets perspective.

+1 on regular links (https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php and http://twitter.com/share). While that functionality will probably be depreciated, they still exist now and we won't have to worry about privacy since it is not an embedded widget. There are additional query strings that you can pass to auto-populate the link and text.

Great - then if that's the case, I'll remove the security bug as a blocker.

JFu - please work with creative to get copy and graphic assets for this - I imagine tiny Twitter/Facebook icons would be needed, along with the mobile launch icon. See what we already have here: https://picasaweb.google.com/113705421631975388425/StartPageSnippetIcons?authkey=Gv1sRgCKSU07Gh2cbmeA.

MKelly - Do you have enough info to get started here? If not, please ping JFu for more details.

Laura: I can get started, but am in the middle of a crunch to get Firefox Flicks done. When do we want this snippet to be ready by?

Thanks for letting us know - flicks should be the priority, and in terms of timing, we'd want to ultimately launch this by 3/30 - having it in working state by 3/19 should provide enough time for IT/security/general GA.

Will that work?
That's perfect. :)
Hi everyone, in response to the updated native UI launch time line, this first shareble snippet will be for the BETA launch in late March. We still want to ramp up excitement for the beta release, so implementation wise it will still go according to plan.

Just chatted with Ben - he will be helping to coordinate QA/Security/Privacy.

This Beta will now be a low-key release, so we'll be saving all of this shareable snippet goodness for the final release.

This shareable snippet live date is set for late May/early June, however it would be great if we could continue the conversation late March/early April to make sure we don't have to rush at the end.

Thanks for the flexibility all!

Any update on the implementation timeline for this bug? Looks like there's been a lot of movement in the design piece.
Winston, I confirmed the dates via email with Jaclyn yesterday. We are shooting for end of this week with next Tuesday as the absolute latest.
Updating this from the design bug: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=725697

The launch date on this was moved to august.
Summary: [NativeUI GA] Shareable Snippets → Shareable Snippets
Latest check with Jaclyn... date on this is now October 1st. Will re-check in mid September.
Update via email with winston... no date for this as of now and is a low priority.
Is this still a low priority?
Yeah.
We actually did this once with a snippet, and the video snippets were also socially shareable.

I could see making a template out of those old snippets if we think social sharing is worth it, but otherwise this bug is pretty out of date.

I'll mark as WONTFIX since I think we didn't do this particular campaign, and we can file a new bug later if we want the feature as a template.
