Hello, Firefox 9.0.1. In Options → Content → Languages, I choose my favourite languages for displaying pages. Among the languages I can choose, I see “Scots Gaelic  [gd]”. What's that ?? Scots ? Scottish Gaelic ? The words “Scots Gaelic” create confusion. Scottish Gaelic is the Celtic language spoken in Scotland. Scots is different. Scots, spoken in Scotland, is the close cousin of English, Scots is a Germanic language. See these references from the W3C and from the IANA : www.w3.org/International/questions/qa-lang-priorities www.iana.org/assignments/language-subtag-registry There is no “Scots Gaelic”. There is the Scots language, with description “Scots”, which has the tag “sco”. And there is the Scottish Gaelic language, with descriptions “Scottish Gaelic” and “Gaelic”, which has the tag “gd”. In Firefox, please replace “Scots Gaelic  [gd]” with “Scottish Gaelic  [gd]”. Thank you for correcting that. Nicolas

This bug is filed wrongly, this does not affect the Gaelic localisation of Firefox, only English. But I'll comment on it from the POV of the Gaelic (gd) localization team. Both terms (Scottish Gaelic and Scots Gaelic) are equally valid names for the language. Neither is derogatory, offensive or ambiguous. Scots (the Germanic language) is always Scots, never "Scots Gaelic". A quick search reveals that "Scottish Gaelic" outnumbers "Scots Gaelic" by 2:1 in terms of ghits. I don't think there's a need for changing this, the only people who might possibly be tempted to mix up Scots and Scots Gaelic are people unfamiliar with the Scottish linguistic situation but then, on the whole they won't be setting their preferences to display Scots (sco) or Scots Gaelic (gd).
Thanks for the input Michael -> will move to Core -> Internationalization (based on similar bug reports I found)
