I tried to install the java plug-in first the way mozilla wants me to, and then
the way I read on a a similar bug for Debian, but Mozilla 0.8 still thinks it
doesn't have the java plug-in even though it's installed.

I've seen something like this, using the regular Java plug-in found on
Netscape's site. I fixed it by finding the newer plug-in for NS6.01 and making
a page to let me install that .xpi manually. This being on Linux.

Go into mozilla/plugins
Run
ln -s java2/plugin/i386/ns600/libjavaplugin_oji.so .
(notice the "." at the end). That should help. If it does, this is a duplicate
of bug 68356.

Well, after trying a different method I got mozilla to just sit there saying
it's busy but not actually doing anything.

Eric Allen, what different method did you try?

download the NS6.01 java plugin via ftp and then go to it with file:// in
mozilla, it asked me if I wanted to install the software and I sad yes, then it
just sat there.

Um... did you ever create the symlink I suggested? The installer in 0.8 had a
known issue that prevented createion of that symlink and thus detection of the
plugin....

Well I can't now because I deleted the plugin to install a fresh copy. Also,
Does 8.1 fix this bug?

Well, I got farther, I did the same as I mentioned above (go to it with file:/)
but as root and it installed the stuff but still sat there doing nothing, then I
closed it out and checked the plugins directory. The java2 directory with all
the stuff was there except for a link to the plugin in mozilla_home/plugins. So
I linked it but it still doesn't think it has the java2 plugin.
