This bug tracks work to be done on top of the Downloads Panel in bug 726444.

* It should be possible to open the centrally defined downloads folder from
a context menu entry, and also add it to the empty download panel as a
  button "Open Downloads Folder".

Does this actually mean that, when this function will be added, only the predefined Downloads folder will be accessible from the Download Panel ,and not eventually other directories where alternatively one may have saved the downloads? If so,that would be an inconvenience for people who routinely tend to save downloads also in other folders beside the predefined Downloads folder.

I expect the command will be in addition to, and not replacing, the one for
opening the individual target folder of downloaded files.
What about users like me who...
 * Set "Always ask me where to save files"
 * Are so far from using a common downloads location that we reset the XDG Downloads
location to something like /tmp to keep the system from constantly re-creating ~/Downloads.

Could it possibly:
 * Offer a "show downloads library" button for the empty list instead?
   * This makes more sense with no common downloads folder
   * This is more useful immediately after a restart to clear leaked browser RAM
 * Hide the context menu entry when "Always ask me where to save files" is selected?
   * Any context menu options that would be relevant to me are probably also relevant
to people who use central download locations, so hiding is better than replacing.
   * Firefox context menus are already some of the most bloated around
   * I can add more lines to my "Hide useless context menu cruft" XUL userstyle, but
     I'd rather not have to

Summary: [Downloads Panel] Add command to open the Downloads folder. → Add command to open the Downloads folder.
I uploaded a picture with my interpretation of what you are saying. Please let me know if that's correct.

I'm not in favour of adding the command in the context menu, since there is the "Open Containing Folder" option already, and I can't imagine a use case where the user would open the download panel, right click on a downloaded file and then choose not to go to where that file actually is but instead where the global Download folder is set.

The original idea in this bug was to add a context menu entry to the Downloads Indicator in the location bar, but it might be also a good idea to add a button to the Downloads View in the Library window.

I'm nominating this bug for the Firefox Backlog so that we can reasonably expect the User Experience team to take a look at this idea in a few weeks from now.

I think the option should not appear for them. If the list is empty, it may be "handy" to be able to reach the last used folder, but the behavior would become unpredictable then. So I think hiding the option is the best bet.

which Library are we speaking about? Cause the panel already has a link to our Library.

I don't understand this...
