At the time when we have released Firefox 10 to our public audience I have noticed that even users with no write-access to the application folder got the MU dialog for an update from 9.0.x to 10.0 some minutes after the update channel has been opened.

For those users an update would fail in any case, so as proposed on IRC we should probably delay such a notification.
Yeah, I think it's kind of a broken experience for these non-admin users. Ccing Robert Strong.

I also was hitting the "get prompted, but have update fail to apply" problem for FF9.0.1->10.0.0 (and again 10.0.0 -> 10.0.1). It also happened for my TB8.0.0->9.0 and then 8.0 -> 10.0.0

For background info, my mac was replaced around this time, and the accounts on the new machine had slightly different permissions when dealing with apps that were restored from timemachine backup. Doing "chmod -R *" got Firefox updates working properly. For Thunderbird, I ended up having to do a full pave-over install.
I don't think we've offered major updates to any of the versions mentioned so far. Why is MU in the summary ?
Well, MU doesn't really correlate to a major version bump, e.g. 9.0 -> 10.0. So sorry for the confusion. Just let us remove MU then.
Summary: Do not show MU advertised update dialog for user with limited permissions → Do not show advertised update dialog for user with limited permissions
Could you capture a screenshot of the dialog shown to users ?
I would refer to someone else because I have to leave for vacation kinda soon. AFAIR it was the default dialog that an update is available.

Adding qawanted. Anthony's also CC'ed on this bug and should be able to help.

I suspect this bug is better summarized as "Don't offer updates to users who can't apply them", which is probably a dupe.

I suspect that's true, yes.
