Do you use the Personal security Inspector (PSI) from Secunia on your system ?

Yes I do, but only to scan the software and inform me about old versions - not to update anything automatically

We got several reports about this issue in the past and it was always (!) PSI.
in PSI open Scan results, doubleclick the firefox entry. Is the auto-update checkbox disabled ?
You could also set the language there...

I got at least a half dozen reports of this issue from German users. Strange that nobody with a different language has yet reported it. For two reports I found the operating system: Windows 7

The Thunderbird team were recently in contact with Secunia about this and we got the following response:
==== Start Quote ====
By default, English is the language used by the auto-update feature in the Secunia PSI. To change this, the user can double-click the program entry in the Scan Results and then choose the preferred language in the drop-down menu.
We are aware that this approach may not be the most intuitive for our users and we are currently treating it as a bug. I have taken the freedom to quote your email to "bump up" our bug report and I have also raised the severity of the bug.
I do not currently have an ETA on the solution but I would like to thank you for reporting. Your comments are most appreciated and I hope we can have this issue solved soon.
==== End Quote ====
Whether or not that helps in this instance, we'll see, but it may help some people if they are having this issue.

Did Secunia fix your issue?
It seems they replied they were working on it.

yes, they fixed it. They perform an update only if you select the language in their Firefox update settings
