(Whiteboard: [Halloween2011Bug])

if I copy a news message, or dnd a news message, there is no throbber activity
and there is no status messages.

we should be doing those things.

I haven't checked for imap and mailbox messages

This is true for mail/IMAP messages too. Please fix this.
The message status bar worked on Version .9.7
I started seeing problems with the message status bar about the time the Mail
Alert was added around .9.8. The problem has continued in 0.9.9 and on 1.0 RC1
& RC2 - This is a regression problem.

When I open the mail client, if I get a message with a large attachment it
appears as if the mail client has locked up. (The status bar should be saying:
"Downloading 1 of 57" or something like that) The status bar just says:
"Document: Done", but if I wait I will eventually get the pop up mail alert.
When I get smaller messages the unread message counter goes up while the mail is
being downloaded, but that is the only indication that anything is happening.

I would think this would be big issue for people with dial-up connections.

I tried turning off the "mail alert" popup, but the status bar is dead with
regard to getting new messages.

Interestingly enough, if I press the get message button it I get the following
messages:

Connecting to host
There are no new messages on the server

So the status bar is partially functional.

I checked with a couple of people running Mozilla (Fizzilla I believe) RC1 & RC2
on Mac OSX and the status bar works as expected.

The Mac version of Mozilla does not have the "Mail Alert".
