Which phone and device are you running, and which build? This works fine for me under 2.3.4 and 4.0.2 on an Xperia Play and a Galaxy Nexus. The checkerboard does appear as part of the cold-startup process, but I do eventually (talking about a second here) see a sample text file.

Samsung Galaxy S2, today's Nightly. Contents are only shown if I minimize and open Nightly again.

Do you happen to see sites fine when opening them via a third-party application through a cold-start of Nightly?

Yes, sites work correctly, the problem is specific to text/plain files.
