How many times you've seen at your friends PC that their default search engine changed even if they "didn't" do anything? Lots of users install software by going to express (standard) installation rather than custom installation. By clicking "next and next 'till finish" , they end up installation with more software they wanted. When they start Firefox, they find out that something has changed; new toolbar, or even new search engine. Whether they search from Awesome bar or search bar, "Firefox changed their search engine"! "Recently" , Google Chrome added new "feature" to prevent third party apps to change default search engine. There are add-ons for Firefox that have similar functionality (Browser Protect) , but we need this "feature" to be built in Firefox.
Summary: Prevent third party apps change default search engine → Prevent third party apps to change default search engine
Duplicate of Bug 718088?
You can't prevent third party apps to change the search engine. They usually have full rights on the system. You can limit only extensions and in the Mozilla case only Jetpack extensions.

Thanks for filing this, Oskar - we're definitely looking into it!
