Opening this bug to have a designer update the new /firefox footer to include email sign up.

Requirements:

*a lot of testing was done on email sign-up, and the current on-page interactions should be kept as close to "as is" as possible.

State 2: (upon click) https://skitch.com/chrissiebrodigan/8eyhe/screen-shot-2012-03-07-at-10.23.49-am

Mocks & examples:

*current new footer - http://www-dev.allizom.org/b/en-US/firefox/technology/

*social buttons will be added per - http://cl.ly/0v1M0q3u263o2a1Z3G07/o

Go forth & create beautiful stuff!

(John, I don't think we should add affiliates to the footer, because bloggers who use the buttons are a very targeted audience. Instead I think we can bake it more into the "Get Involved" experience - lmk.)
Ty, can you take this one? Feels like a good fit, given your work on the related social assets. I agree with Chrissie that we should mimic the existing functionality as closely as possible...basically we just need to find a place for this in the new template.

Chrissie, when is this due exactly?

You down with that Ty?
Currently, the social bar sitting attached to our footer in the two-tone blue stack has the email module over on the right. I say we keep the stack but have it floating above the footer instead of sitting on it, matching this mockup: http://cl.ly/1i1k1S383Q102A0t021S/o

The module could then expand the same as it does now, and we can keep all of the text etc the same. That way, it becomes our standard email module we can inject into pages anywhere, or we can bind it so it comes standard with the footer.
Love the overall look of this, thanks Sean - I think the fully stretched version as its own module rather than sticking it in the footer is really nice, and I'm guessing will draw more attention to the signup field.

The only outstanding question I have is what the copy should be, since we use a few different lines in different places. I've asked Winston and Jess (outside the bug) to review and provide any updates.

So, there might be a few tweaks but I think this is really nice in terms of a design direction.
Quick update - there are a few email strategy issues that need to be worked out (is this a signup for the Foundation newsletter, the Firefox newsletter, both, something else, etc) before we implement this. I like the design style a lot, but we should have more info from Winston in the coming days so let's see how that shakes out before finalizing.

If all goes well, we should still be able to hit the Wednesday deadline noted above without much difficulty.

Steven, to follow up from our conversation earlier, how would you like to proceed with re: comment #5? From talking to Winston and Ben it seems like the main thing to do is keep the signup experience basically the same as it is now, but provide the option to sign up for both the Firefox and Mozilla newsletters.

Would you like us to provide a mockup of how that interaction might look?
Sort of related to the email sign up, I've added the Facebook, Twitter, and Firefox Affiliates links to the global footer.
A mockup here would be nice, we don't know how to integrate it into the new design.

Awesome, thanks. And just so I'm clear, we're not allowed to use the icons anymore for some legal reason? Can anyone explain that more? I'd be interested to learn why that's off limits, especially given that these are just 'follow us' links and that we've been doing it for years.

Absolutely - we'll work on that mockup on Monday.
The email signup in the footer is all hooked up and Steven is finishing the design and implementing the sliding interaction.
The form is now styled and has the slide-open functionality we discussed.
Looks great. We're missing the "We will only send you Mozilla-related information." line though...that's super important.

Also, I know this is has been captured elsewhere, but the promo text should read "Get Mozilla updates" (capital M).
Footer email forms should be all set now.
