I don't know how common it is to have green objects in graph when unlinking, but if we could just skip those, that would lead to fewer root/unroot/unlink calls.

A "green" object is one that is acyclic. I'm not really sure how we'd somehow have them in the graph, but still know they are acyclic. I guess you could add a new color and mark cyclic objects a different color, but that seems like a lot of work.
