I am unable to send or recieve mail through my pop3/smtp setup that has worked in all previous versions of mozilla. I have uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times trying to fix this problem. I have reinstalled .8.0 and my mail works again. Also, the problem of deleted mails coming back does not seem to be fixed thought the status says it is. There is also long pause whenever Mozilla .8.1 tries to access anything on the net. I know this may fit into many categories, but I am low on time as the mail bug has cost me most of my day.
Have you tried to create a new profile? Sometimes incompatabilities crop up between two builds (especially two milestones) that cause profiles to become "corrupted" To add a new profile run mozilla with -profilemanager as a flag. i.e. "c:\Program Files\Mozilla\bin\mozilla.exe" -profilemanager Then go thorough the steps to add new and set it up. You should be able to get your new mail through this profile then. Don't use your old profile unless you need to get old e-mail. (I usually just forward it all to myself -- don't know of a way to import the mail without getting all of the bad settings too.) Please report back how it goes!
I have, as recommended, made a new profile. It still failed retrieve or send mail. It never even asked my password, but never gave any indication as to any errors such as "wrong password" Damon
Reporter are you using a proxy?
No, I am not behind a proxy.
Reporter have you tried one of the latest nightlies? Does that fix the problem?
I would love to install a nightly, but without the install I am not sure everything will go in okay. To be honest I am not great at trying to figure them out. I know I cannot simply copy ot overt the existing mozilla .8.1.
I installed .8.1 on my Debian machine and mail works great under it. Must be a Windows thing.. I think I will stick to the Linux machine till new release.
I have had the same problem, except I am able to download the first 28 messages on the server before it just stops downloading. I just upgraded to the latest nightly (2001041904), and I am still having problems. This is only on one of my servers (mail.linuxfreemail.com), but I haven't had 28 messages on the other server.
Marking NEW.

This bug has not been touched since 2001-04-19, therefore this reminder. Reporter could you please retest with a current build and let us know if the problem is still present, or if this bug can be closed.
I'm also having problems sending mail - dialog box says cannot find SMTP server. Have checked configuration - it's ok. So, I click OK in the dialog box, hit send again, and repeat if the dialog box comes up again - usually 3rd or 4th send goes. I'm just a user - what can I do to fix? Have uninstalled Netscape 6&7, still have 4.79 (most reliable ever).
Sorry - incomplete info on my part - I'm using Mozilla 1.5, downloaded about one month ago. I just tried to send myself a message to test the process again. Dialog box reads: "The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server pilot.msu.edu failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your SMTP server setting is correct and try again or else contact your network adminstator." I clicked ok in the box, & hit send again. Just now I had to repeat the process five times, and on the 6th the message went through. Suggestions?
