I've hit this error twice today, on my work and home computer. Both of them run Ubuntu 12.04 and have Firefox Nightly installed in /opt/firefox. I do have write permissions on /opt. I use localized build.

Hmm, OK this is not a dupe if you have write access to /opt. Can you please check the contents of /opt/firefox/updates and see if you can find a last-update.log file there?
Also, can you please install an en-US build from <http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2012-05-22-08-02-20-mozilla-central/firefox-15.0a1.en-US.linux-i686.tar.bz2> and see if you hit the same bug using that?

It's dupe, see Bug 757965 comment 2. I've owned /opt/firefox, but not /opt.
