We are working on launching the Mozilla onboarding tool. It will be first launched for paid staff and then we'll create additional infrastructure to onboard volunteers through the same portal. We are using a mana page to collect all data + copy for the onboarding project. Attached is the link to the mana that has the copy we would like to have edited. https://mana.mozilla.org/wiki/display/PEOPLEWIKI/Portal+Content+Home As a whole we are looking to create a consistent tone + look and feel for the onboarding portal. Should feel geek chic, standard playful Mozilla, and should apply to both paid staff and volunteer. (when thinking about language and audience)
For additional information & to help navigate the mana page. We specifically need copy editing on the following: ** please note that copy is still being curated for the cultural + history + governance parts - eta 6/13) Welcome Page Traveling on your first day Get Ready Page + 3 sub pages (Community, Culture, Get involved) Get Set Page + 3 sub pages (Governance, Mozillafy Me, Pack your Toolbox) Go! Page + 3 subpages (Getting started, Getting Familiar, The Essentials) * note - there are a number of "benefits" pages that will have similar information that can't be changed, but will need the copy edited headers for the page) Learn Grow Master Congrats Mozillian We will also need copy editing done for our task notifications. These are the notifications a user will see when there are tasks to complete, reminders to complete something etc. Those task notifications are also on the mana page and more specifically here: https://mana.mozilla.org/wiki/display/PEOPLEWIKI/Notification+And+Task+Copy Feel free to make edits directly on the mana page, and add copy as needed. Or let me know if you have a preference on how to track changes. Thanks, Amie

Hi Amie. Looks like there's a lot to review here, and as you point out, still some information missing. What's the timing on this? When will you need the copy ready by?
Hi Matej We have a target completion date of 6/18 for this first phase of content. We will then provide the culture + history content by 6/14 and have a target completion date for that + any revisions by 6/29. As an fyi - we are looking to hand all our content over to Silk Road (onboarding portal) on 7/1 so they can start to populate the portal. Our go live date for the project is in August. If it helps to understand our timing.
Hi there Please format the copy that needs editing into an etherpad and share that on this bug. Matej will dive in and make the necessary edits. Once finalized, the appropriate person from your team can then update the mana site accordingly. In addition to outlining the content that needs editing on an etherpad, it would also help if you have any guiding thoughts as to what about the content you feel needs editing. Is it too long? too complex? not "mozilla" enough? etc. general guidance would be appreciated.
Something like Google Docs would work for me as well, if that's better for you, but having it all in one place with some added direction would certainly help me out. Thanks!
Quick summary of a conversation I had with Stephanie yesterday: - seems like Matej editing directly in Mana may be best after all, but he & Stephanie will talk early next week to walk through the details. - during that talk, my strong reco is that you guys focus on the most important areas for Matej to focus on so he doesn't have to wade through the entire 80 pages. For example, intros to sections or parts that talk broadly about what we do are good for him to look at. Parts that talk about the details of benefits or simply need formatting fixes are not. - I'm imagining a rough 80/20 breakdown...Matej tackles the most important 20%, and then we pull in a freelancer to comb through the other 80% for stylistic and formatting consistency. - as for tone, we already have that documented at http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/brand/copy/. I don't think we need to deviate from that here...our usual voice should work fine in other words. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!
Excited to have you on the project Matej - I sent you a meeting invite for Monday. If you get a chance to look over https://mana.mozilla.org/wiki/display/PEOPLEWIKI/Portal+Content+Home before the meeting that would be amazing. We had some strange permissions issues last week. It should be open read/write to all. Let me know if you have issues accessing the page? Thank you!
Stephanie & Matej - now that you guys have met, what's the next step?
It looks like there was a lot of copy that wasn't quite ready for me to dive in yet, but I'm going to have a look through it all to get my head around it better and see if the overall flow is working, etc. The task notification copy is pretty much ready (or at least large parts of it are) so I'll also get going on editing that this week. Once the other pieces are ready (I think Stephanie said their deadline was early next week, but correct me if I'm wrong) I'll get going on the priority pages there and then hand off the rest for more general copy editing. Please let me know if I missed anything.
Thanks Matej. One more question - should I still plan on bringing in a freelancer to review/edit the parts that Matej doesn't cover in depth? If so, when should they plan on working on that? Am trying to get all the pieces in place...
Hi John, I just finished updating the plan based upon all the content coming in. It looks like we are going to push out one week so final content revisions (copy edit) would be due by 7/6 instead of the week before. Anything that Matej isn't going to cover would be good to get a freelancer for. I would think the bulk of the copy editing could be done that couple of weeks before with the push in the final week.

Quick update here from me. I've gone through and made some edits to the task notifications. Over all I think it's looking really good. My changes were mostly for grammar and style, but the tone and voice are there. I also had a look at the main content areas, but it looks like those aren't quite ready for me yet. Let me know when they are and I'll give the main pages there a pass as well. From there I think it will be easy to hand the rest over to a freelancer. I can give them some guidance about what to look for, but mostly it will be a straightforward copy edit.

Thanks Matej. Do you have a sense of how much we'll be handing over to a freelancer and what we'll actually be asking them to do? And is the time frame still the same as what Stephanie outlined in comment #12?
(In reply to John Slater from comment #14) > Thanks Matej. Do you have a sense of how much we'll be handing over to a > freelancer and what we'll actually be asking them to do? And is the time > frame still the same as what Stephanie outlined in comment #12? Not sure about timing, but I'd like the freelancer to go over everything, if possible. I'm mainly looking for tone and clarity, and while I'm correcting the style, grammar and other errors I find as well, I think it would be good for someone to go over the entire site to make sure it's consistent and that there's nothing I missed.
Guys, If I can play any sort of newbie role here, just let me know - would love to see either way for learning-sake. ~new internal comms person
FYI: I have Brandon Barker lined up to help with the copy editing here. Just let me know when we need to get him actively involved.

Amie, I'm not sure how to proceed here. Looking at the mana site, it's still in the same shape it was a few weeks ago, with missing content, outlines, notes and outstanding questions. It still doesn't look ready for me to edit. Can you advise? Thanks.

Hi Matej -- Let's jump on the phone quickly today and connect. Lots of work has been done in the mana so I'm not sure what you are looking at. Probably best solved directly, let me know what time works best for you. w/r/t the freelancer - I managed to get him access to the mana page and he's going to knock out the task + notification copy first per my discussion with Matej. Matej might have a better idea percentage wise, how much the freelancer will do vs. Matej himself. I'd guess around 60 percent.
Amie — I'm free for the next couple of hours so let me know what works for you.
