User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:13.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/13.0 Build ID: 20120605140154 Steps to reproduce: I have a slow internet connection (and non-reliable apparently!). Sometimes, when I click a message, thunderbird starts loading the message. However, it doesn't finish (at least, as far as I wait). Now, I select another email (e.g. an already loaded message). The "loading message" bar disappears. However, it seems that thunderbird is still busy with that message. If I try to load another email, it doesn't. (show's "loading message", but doesn't do anything). Even if I select another non-offline message which is really small, it doesn't work. So, I cannot load ANY messages from now on. Now, I close thunderbird. Apparently, it is closed. However, it's not. If I try to open thunderbird again, it says that thunderbird is already running and so it cannot open a new instance. Yes, the process still exists (apparently still busy with loading that first message). I must kill the process to be able to open a new thunderbird instance. Actual results: Unable to load any messages after the first one which it fails to get. Unable to properly close thunderbird. Must kill it and start it again to be able to read other messages. Expected results: If I select another message while thunderbird is trying to load the current message, it must stop trying to load it. Also, I need to be able to cancel reading a message anyway (I clicked a HUGE email, and thunderbird has started to load it, and it can't. I want to stop this effort. Not possible in the described conditions, except by killing thunderbird process.
Is this over pop or imap ? Do you have some firewall andti-virus software running ? anything in tools -> Error console when it happens ?
Imap. I have Fedora's firewall enabled, but it certainly doesn't block any outgoing connections. Also, I don't have this problem when I have a good internet connection. And I'm able to read messages before that happens (And I can read again if I kill thunderbird and start again). No, unfortunately nothing in Error console.
can we get an imap log ( see https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging) , so we can investigate ?

Nikolay, can you have a look at the log?
I also have this issue on openSUSE that is forcing me to continuously restart Thunderbird. Please let me know if I can help in any way to provide more information that can help.
I have been experiencing this issue for months now, I can't find dozens of threads about it on the internet but it seems like it was never fixed. Every time it gets in this state I must kill the Thunderbird process and restart it to read my emails. Please get in touch with me if you need any more details to help for diagnostic.
I've been living with this bug for more than a year now and nothing helped after trying everything I found on the numerous threads on this problem...
Hedayat, do you sitll see this problem?

If you mean with the latest version (I've 45.2.0 now), I'm not sure, and I should try to see if I can reproduce the problem. But if you mean seeing it recently, yeah I think I've seen it in recent months. I'll try to create a suitable (slow) internet connection to see if it happens again.
Resolved per whiteboard, feel free to reopen if you still see this

(Jerome no longer uses Thunderbird) When you test, please also check to see if you have high CPU like bug 683651. Also your profile is not on a network drive like bug 905576?

Yes, I do have high CPU utilization when sending/receiving on a slow connection. But no, my profile is in my local HDD. BTW, I'm still trying to see if I can reproduce the problem. It is not easy to make sure that conditions are same. But I'll try to do enough tests in a few days.
