RESOLVED FIXED

People

(Reporter: thomas.sisson.1, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:13.0) Gecko/20120615 Firefox/13.0.1 SeaMonkey/2.10.1
Build ID: 20120615050225

Steps to reproduce:

I clicked the new Sign in button. BrowserId window popped up. I signed in and BrowserId picked my email address and signed me in. The page loads to allow me to create a new profile or load an existing profile. I don't have an existing developer profile, so I chose to add a profile and clicked Register.

I made sure that both mozilla.org and apache.org and browserid.org were able to set cookies. I also checked to make sure that Cookie Safe had those three domains in the whitelist. I started SeaMonkey in Safe Mode as well and received the same results. I was able to use BrowserId to log in at bugzilla.mozilla.org, so I think there is an issue with MDN.

Actual results:

I received the following response from https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/users/browserid_register

Permission Denied

We're sorry, we're afraid we can't do that.

No computer has ever made a mistake or distorted information. We are all, by any practical definition of the words, foolproof and incapable of error. So it can only be attributable to human error. If so, file a bug for my human operators.

Expected results:

I should have been able to follow the process and receive a confirmation email, if available, and finalize registration.
Please don't mark this as RESOLVED WORKSFORME or FIXED. This is an issue that is repeatable for some, but not all. Just because it works for you, or you can get it to work for you, it is not fixed or resolved. Please explain the steps you take to resolve the issue for yourself. Additionally, make sure that you have totally logged out of all Mozilla resources and cleared your passwords and try it in safe mode on more than one computer for more than one account. This has been marked as a problem in several locations with variations since implementation of BrowserId.

I realize most developers are volunteers and appreciate all the work that has been done on this project since Netscape 6. I have been using and testing since Mozilla 0.9. If I didn't know what I was doing, I would be using Internet Explorer.

Thanks again.
Thanks for filing a bug Tom!

Raymond, can you help find out how to reproduce this?
Keywords: qawanted
I think it was a server issue with the new BrowserID login. I would mark it Resolved and make note that it resolved itself while being Unconfirmed.

The steps to reproduce would have been 1) Click on Sign in link, 2) Follow BrowserID login process, 3) Login window closes.

Expected Results: User is signed in to developer website.
Actual Results: User is not signed in at developer website.

Additionally, the note at the top saying that content cannot be updated at this time is gone.

Sorry I took a month to respond.
Thomas: I am going to mark this as WORKSFORME (really WORKSFORYOU), as it sounds that you are not having this problem any more. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi all, it does not work for me. I experience the exact same problem as Thomas in comment 3.
I can't remember having created an account on MDN (but not 100% sure) if that can help.
Thanks for letting us know, foudfou.

Raymond: Can you take a look at reproducing this?

I can't reproduce this
I can reproduce this now with a testaccount on developer-new.allizom.org. PM me for details
Severity: normal → critical
Thanks Raymond. We will be sure to take take a look into this.
Please try again on developer.mozilla.org now?
Thomas: Any luck signing into developer.mozilla.org now?
I think it doesn't work as expected if you don't already have a MDN account. I followed the steps in comment 3, observed the same issue (not identified as logged in), tried to create a new profile, and got a "Permission Denied" error.
I happened to create a new account though, but just can't remember how/reproduce.
Just to be sure I understand: You saw a "Permission Denied" error after logging in, but besides that you *did* log in successfully?
John, the sign-in process with BrowserID seems to work, but since I didn't have any account on MDN, I'm invited to create one (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/users/browserid_register).
Then, when I try to create a new profile/account("New MDN Members"), I get "Permission Denied".
The reason is (I remember now) because I didn't use my BrowserID-email as username.

I see several problems here:
1. once you've gone through the BrowserID authentication process, it doesn't appear on the return page that you are authenticated (there is still a "Sign in" button)
2. it's not clear that new users must use their BrowserID-email as username.
Ah! Thanks for the information, foudfou.

You actually do not need to use your email as your username. Which username did you try when it gave you the "Permission Denied" error? Which username did you try when it worked?
"foudfou" -> Permission Denied
"foudil.newbie@gmail.com" -> OK
I feel a little bit ashamed: I managed to create my "foudfou" account on MDN by using a fresh Firefox profile.

Here is the whole process:
1. start Firefox with a new profile
2. go to MDN
3. click "Sign in"
4. see the new Persona window asking for an email
5. enter a new Persona email in it, click "next"
6. enter a password twice, click "verify email"
7. validate your new Persona account by clicking on the link provided in the email received from Persona in Thunderbird, and entering your password in the Firefox tab that it opens
8. this closes the Persona window and redirects to https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/users/browserid_register
9. in "New MDN Members", in the "Username" field, enter a username like "foudfou", click "Create a new profile"
10. see you're logged in with your username

So there seems to be something wrong with my usual profile.
With my usual profile, I can't modify a page either: "Permission Denied" when saving or previewing changes.

I disabled all my addons, and the problem remains.
Which pages did you try to edit? Some pages are having collision issues.
Luke, I couldn't modify https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Code_snippets/Finding_Window_Handles with my usual Firefox profile. With a new Firefox profile, I could.
John, you may realize I'm a little slow to respond. I get busy and only read email that must be read. If you see comment 3, I was able to log in. I have not tried since. I do believe this is a MDN or BrowserID issue; however, I did not try it with a different browser.
Thanks, Thomas. Looks like I got a little confused back there.

I am going to mark this one as RESOLVED since Thomas' original issue has been fixed. It looks like other people are seeing the different-profile thing that foudfou mentioned, so we are going to really look into this with bug 786652.

On second thought, I don't think foudfou's issue will be covered by bug 786652.

foudfou: Can you please send us a video screencast (http://screencast.com/) of the issue you are seeing. Please start the video before logging in and end the video after you see the Permission Denied error.
John, here is a screencast of a failed login attempt with my usual Firefox profile:
