I sometimes use smilies in support forum posts, especially in posts that could be taken negatively. People who don't recognize the text versions may still take posts negatively that aren't meant to be negative.
It would be great if sumo detected certain series' of characters, and automatically replaced it with a smiley. I think it would especially help with disgruntled users.

This is cool, and I don't know if this can be done but I agree with this. (Bugzilla should do this too) :)

One problem I have with this is on a lot of technical forums (which this is, sometimes) have the problem where someone triggers emoticons by accident.
Are there really users who don't understand that :) is a smiley face? That is surprising to me. This feature sounds like something that would be cute, but wouldn't really improve giving support. If you have a specific instance of people not understanding basic text emoticons though, I'd love to see it.
