This is a follow-up from bug 760898. This bug has a patch using the preferences to store a status value. This is not the correct way to do but was done because right now it's the simplest way to do that.

Sounds like this shouldn't block turning the feature on (it's not actually a functionality loss). Anant - Do you agree or disagree?

Not a blocker for the v1 release, but we should fix this at some point.
