Build 2001-04-26-04: Win ME
Haven't tried linux.
Overview: In a New Message/compose window try to delete a smiley icon using the
Backspace key, it fails.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Go to Edit|Mail/News Account Settings and verify that the "Compose
messages in HTML format" is selected.
2. Create a new message and with the cursor in the body of the message click on
the smiley button and select a smiley icon.
3. Notice that a flashing cursor appears after the smiley icon
4. Select the Backspace key
Actual Results: The smiley icon is not deleted.
Workaround: If the mouse is used to select the smiley icon and the Backspace key
is used then it is deleted.
Expected Results: When the cursor appears after a smiley icon, selecting the
Backspace key should remove the smiley.

Does multiple, consecutive presses of the delete/backspace key work to
eventually delete the smiley?

Selecting the Backspace on Windows and the Delete key on the Mac multiple times
also does not delete the smiley.

The smile image is a BACKGROUND image. To delete the smiley (with either
Backspace or Delete) user must SELECT the smiley image (a square has to be
around the smiley, if the smiley is selected).
This is the only way to delete it.
Smiley is a complex structure, user cannot delete it as single text character by pushing Delete just one time.
It works the same way on all platform (including and Mac).
So I am considering this bug as "work for me".
