Steps to reproduce:

Discussed on dev-platform thread "MDN Kuma wiki launch Friday at 10 AM PDT":

I asked if it would be possible to add another markup editing option (such as mediawiki or markdown --- bug 780227). It was observed that this is made very hard by the fact that MDN uses HTML as its source format.

In my opinion, being easy to translate to other formats is a key requirement for a good source format. So if MDN's use of HTML as a source format makes bug 780227 hard to solve, then that means that HTML is not a good choice for a source format.

There are no plans to change our source format at the moment. I am going to mark as WONTFIX, but we can always reconsider later.

Meanwhile, I am going to update bug 780227 to discuss the possibility of supporting different markup languages. If we decide to do that, and doing so requires us to use a different source format, we can reopen this.
