Type about:config into the address bar and look down the list for the extensions.strictCompatibility entry. What is its value?

Please enable extensions.logging.enabled in about:config, Open the error console and clear its contents then try to install the extension. Copy and paste any messages that appear in the error console after doing that.

Blair, do you have any ideas here? I can't think of anything that would cause this to happen

Hmm, one possibility is that something is interfering with the update check. That update check needs to succeed for it to be compatible.
Are you running any security software, a firewall, or are you on a corporate network?
Could you click the following link:
https://versioncheck.addons.mozilla.org/update/VersionCheck.php?reqVersion=2&id=en-GB@dictionaries.addons.mozilla.org&version=1.19.1&maxAppVersion=4.0b8pre&status=userEnabled,incompatible&appID={ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384}&appVersion=14.0.1&appOS=WINNT&appABI=x86-msvc&locale=en-GB¤tAppVersion=14.0.1&updateType=49&compatMode=normal
Save it to a file, and attach it to this bug?
Technical explanation:
install.rdf gives a maxVersion of 4.0b8, so its not compatible by default without the compat update from that update ping. There are a couple of places where we don't log an error when doing the ping - I assume we're hitting one of those (filed bug 787052 to fix that). So I'm wondering if its failing the certificate check.

Also, after you click that link, right click and select page info, go to the security section. In the top section who does it say it is verified by?

Hi Dave,
It says it's verified by "ESET, spol. s r. o."

Ok this explains the problem. ESET is intercepting every single connection your computer makes to websites, even secure ones. Presumably it is doing some kind of scanning for malicious content but what it means is that Firefox no longer knows how secure the original content was or who verified the owner of the website. The source of add-on update information (the thing critical to allowing this add-on to install) is subject to more rigorous security checks than normal websites and so since Firefox doesn't recognise ESET as one of its trusted authorities it is ignoring the update information and so not allowing you to install the add-on.

I was thinking the same thing, however I disabled ESET & I'm still unable to install it. Would you have any work-around or solution to this please?

After you disabled it what did the "Verified by" line change to in the page info for that page?

Hi Dave,
-I've completely removed ESET from my machane & I am now able to install the Dictionary
- Verified by "GeoTrust, Inc."
- Sorry to have wasted your time. Do you have any suggestions on how I can get round this with ESET or where I can go for help please?
Any help would be greatly appeciated. Again sorry for wasting everybodys time. I'm sure why ESET is being over zealous with this particular Add-on.
Regards

Maybe install a different firewall in its stead?
I'm setting this to INVALID which in this case means "Not a Mozilla bug".

P.S. If there is a bug reporting system for ESET, maybe you could report the problem there.

Great news - glad we figured that out.

I think this offers a solution:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/923516
> Again sorry for wasting everybodys time.
You haven't wasted our time at all! It was important for us to figure out what was going wrong, and if we could fix it. In this case, it was ESET causing the issue - but it could have turned out to be something else such as a bug in our code.
However now I'm wondering how common this issue is, and wondering if we can detect it and maybe warn people (filed bug 787874).
> I'm sure why ESET is being over zealous with this particular Add-on.
It won't be targeting specifically that add-on - the part that was failing was essentially an update check for the add-on. ESET will be doing this to all add-on update checks, so normal add-on updates wouldn't have worked either.

Incidentally neither will Firefox update checks, which are even stricter about the certificate it expects to see from the update server.

Thanks for all of your help, it's greatly appreciated.
One more question if I may. Was there ever a comprehensive resolution to the "Server Not Found" error?

I don't see that mentioned anywhere in this bug report, can you elaborate

Sorry, I didn't mention it in this thread. It's something else I've been experiencing & seems to be well documented from what I've found.
I seem to get the error intermittently & doesn't seem to be replicated in I.E explorer.

Portmanteau, this particular bug is about a problem which is a bug, but not a bug in Mozilla, so this bug is INVALID for bugzilla.mozilla.org. You may want to report it on the ESET bug reporting system, if they have one, or, if you have a different problem, you may want to open a different bug. If you keep repeatedly REOPENing this bug for no reason that we can see, steps will be taken to revoke your Bugzilla account.
See also http://support.mozilla.com/ or http://kb.mozillazine.org/ for help about how to use Firefox, and see https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/page.cgi?id=etiquette.html about proper behaviour at bugzilla.mozilla.org.
