78735 - alternative "low resolution" UI for mailnews

How about an alternative 2-pane UI layout that could be designed to simplify the
e-mail experience for first-time computer users and to fit better on
small-resolution devices.  This would mean the message headers currently
displayed in the threadPane would have to be merged into the folderPane.  This
would allow for more screen real-estate for viewing email messages without
having to collapse any of the mail controls manually.

We have a 2-pane UI exactly as you describe implemented already. Check your 
settings in the MailNews preferences pane (Edit > Preferences).

This looks, to all intents and purposes, like a dup of bug 21344.

Yes I agree bug 21344 is very similar to this one.  What would be very nice
though would be a way to possibly navigate folders and messages in one view. 
This does of course bring up message management issues (i.e. moving a message
from your INBOX to another folder).  It would eliminate the need for a drop down
box for folders though.
