You'll need to check out part of the mozilla.org repository, where the Thunderbird site is being stored. You can:

svn co https://svn.mozilla.org/projects/mozilla.org/branches/staging/thunderbird/

Please translate the file in the mozilla.org svn repository for the Thunderbird 16 What's New page, that is:

/it/thunderbird/16.0/whatsnew/index.html

If you want to provide a translated image, you can place it in: 
https://svn.mozilla.org/projects/mozilla.org/branches/staging/thunderbird/img/whatsnew/l10n/
The image name should be:
boxcom-it.png

Once the image is on the server, the page will automatically update the <img> tag. You do not need to change it.

I have made some little changes. 
In the original en-US, in the first paragraph there is no a period at the end, I don't know if this is wanted or is a mistake. Also if it is wanted I think that in italian the period is needed.
In the second paragraph, I think, there is a typo: platfroms instead of platform.
