We want to ship Firefox with a good list of search engines for Aragonese. We'll do this in three phases: First, the localization team and Milos (Milos Dinic) will look at the market for the language and come up with a good set of search providers. Daniel, we'll need your input on this. The guidelines for making recommendations are found on <https://wiki.mozilla.org/L10n:Firefox/Productization>. We currently use this set for en-US, to which we can fall back in the case of lacking localized alternatives: Google, Yahoo!, Bing, Amazon, eBay, Twitter, Wikipedia After we decided on a particular search engine, Milos will contact the owner and ask for permission and for specifics, like proper search flags. Daniel, we'll likely need your help to at least get the owner's contact information. Once we have a specification on what the search engines for Aragonese should look like, Milos and the localization team will work on an implementation on that. Milos will create and attach patches for the desired changes and get them reviewed. After a successful review, Milos will land them. Daniel, if you're interested, you could create the patches, too. You'd ask Milos for review on those before landing. Please don't commit any modifications in browser/searchplugins to the hg repository without a patch reviewed by Milos, Stas, Axel or someone else appointed by Milos. The data here is sensitive to users and our search partners, thus requiring extra care here. The Aragonese team and Milos will be driving this bug to completion. The current status in the repo at http://hg.mozilla.org/users/entaltoaragon_gmail.com/an/ is google wikipedia-an gea bing Mind sharing why you chose that set? Also, for gea, we'd need a permission from the site itself, and we probably need to review the implementation of that plugin.

GEA is an encyclopedia in Spanish, but the contents are related to the region of Aragón, where the aragonese language is spoken. GEA's owner is "Dicom Medios S. L.", you can contact they at correo@dicom-medios.com The legal info about this page is at http://www.enciclopedia-aragonesa.com/info/legal.asp (in Spanish) From this set, the only page that has contents in aragonese is wikipedia, but I think that it's ok to use at least Google for the global search. Anyway this set is open to your recommendations.

Do you need any more information about this from the team?

Given what you already have in your repo, I'd say: general search engines: Google, Bing language-specific search: gea, Wikipedia(an) That said, we'll need 2 more search engines that are related to online shopping. In en-US, we use Amazon and eBay - would you consider those be better than, for instance, what es-ES currently has in http://hg.mozilla.org/releases/l10n/mozilla-aurora/es-ES/file/96e4e293d0d1/browser/searchplugins/list.txt ?

You can add eBay-es engine, and twitter if isn't mandatory that both be online shopping related.

Daniel, so, here's what we we're up with so far: general search engines: Google, Bing specific interest search: gea, Wikipedia(an), twitter e-commerce: eBay(es-ES) This means we'll need approval for using gea. I can send them an email in English, I'm putting that on my to-do list. I just wanted to confirm with you that this list is right, so we can start talking about implementation. Speaking about implementation, we'll need to code simple opensearch plugins for gea and wikipedia(an)(we'll copy eBay(es) from Spanish l10n repository). Now, would you be comfortable with creating those, or would you like me to do it for you. If you find it easy for you to do it, I'm all in, but if you think it would take a lot of time for you to do it, then it's probably better for me to help you with that. Milos.

I confirm this list as right one. In my user repo, we have an implementation for wikipedia-an and GEA, maybe you want to check if https://hg.mozilla.org/users/entaltoaragon_gmail.com/an/file/a98305a59056/browser/searchplugins/gea.xml and https://hg.mozilla.org/users/entaltoaragon_gmail.com/an/file/a98305a59056/browser/searchplugins/wikipedia-an.xml are correct and we can use them for this.

Sent an email to GEA owner.

GEA owner didn't answer a previous email that we sent time ago... I don't know if they will answer you... Anyway, we can forget this search engine if they don't answer, it was only a suggestion, it isn't important.

Daniel, there's still no response from GEA owner, so there's not much we can do there, except for waiting. Anyhow, we should proceed with what we have, and if GEA's owner replies, we can easily add it to search engines list later. So, I wanted to ask you one more question: Do you think Amazon would work for Aragonese users?
Comment 11•11 years ago
|
||
Maybe, as a global online store it could be useful for users, I think that we can add it to the list.

Daniel, so, I propose we go with: google yahoo(in Spanish) bing twitter eBay(in Spanish, ie. es-ES) wikipedia(in Aragonese) Would you agree?

I'm running some automated tests and found these errors for Aragonese Error analyzing searchplugin (an, browser, aurora, yahoo-es.xml) junk after document element: line 23, column 0 Error analyzing searchplugin (an, browser, aurora, eBay-es.xml) junk after document element: line 23, column 0 It looks like the patch didn't land clean, the code for each plugin is present twice. It's easier to see looking at each plugin: http://hg.mozilla.org/releases/l10n/mozilla-aurora/an/file/0a259ff7e0d8/browser/searchplugins/eBay-es.xml http://hg.mozilla.org/releases/l10n/mozilla-aurora/an/file/0a259ff7e0d8/browser/searchplugins/yahoo-es.xml
