Tip for an icon: "Upload an icon for your app or choose from one of ours. " "The icon is displayed nearly everywhere your app is. " Tip for an image asset: "Images to use in various location around the site, " "including various grid views on both mobile and desktop. " Is an icon still used? If so where? Nearly everywhere except where the image asset is used?
Looks like they are all slightly different image sizes. The image assets are labeled Featured, Mobile, and Desktop tiles. I don't know where icons are used. I agree it's confusing - I'd like to avoid all the different image sizes.

We still use icons on the detail page and the search page (per cvan). It might eventually make sense to deprecate icons and phase in image assets, instead, though. They're easier to work with and my code is somewhat better than the icon code (not to toot my own horn or anything).
