From n.p.m.mail-news:
"Any chance that Mozillla will adopt the Netcape 4 technique of providing the
full subject line (in yellow), when parking your mouse atop a newsgroup subject
line?"
Answer from Seth:
"When we switched the threadpane from a tree to outliner, I forgot about this.
I'm pretty sure the outliner can do tooltips, I just haven't tried yet."

it should be for any outliner text cell, right?
Summary: Display tooltip for truncated subjects → Display tooltips for truncated outliner cells (example, subject in threadpane)

Hold your horses, everyone!
Before you start coding, you should be aware that this bug is a duplicate of bug
32157. It's assigned to Ben Goodger. He's working on a patch but he's a bit busy
at the moment. So I'm sure Håkan's (or anybody else's) help would be appreciated.
Someone else will have to mark this as a duplicate: I haven't got the necessary
privileges.

How can that be if we had this working in our old tree, at least in mailnews?

As far as I'm aware, tooltips for subjects have never appeared in Mail. However,
they do appear for folders in the left-hand pane (they always show, even when
the name is not truncated - they show not only the name but also the number of
messages).
I don't think this is a regression, but it's certainly 4xp.

Seth, would it be OK to implement this like we do currently, mailnews
specifically - to do some hacking for the threadpane to work like this?

On the other hand, I don't think it's possible for the threadpane to know
whether a row's caption is truncated so it would always show a tooltip...
So: either we implement it to always show a tooltip for all rows in the
threadpane (like the folderpane does it), or we can span this bug to include to
be a global outliner thing and implement it for all outliners (I'm not sure
about that...)
What do you think?

I think this bug is a duplicate of bug 32157. Many of the issues regarding
whether it's possible to know if some text has benn truncated and whether the
tooltip should be displayed all the time have already been discussed there.
I now have the required permissions to mark bugs as duplicates, so I'm doing so.
Reopen if you disagree with me.
