User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0 Build ID: 20121024073032 Steps to reproduce: I can't get canvas.getContext("experimental-webgl") on a Chinese tab: RockChip RK2918 (1GHz, 1GB, Vivante GC800, 1280x800, 9') Android 4.03, Firefox 16.02 but WebGL works in mobile Opera (very slowly)
See bug 771774; there are driver issues with that chipset/GPU. Actually, are you able to run Firefox at all on that device? Sounds like that shouldn't be possible. I imagine Opera is rendering stuff on a remote server which is why it works but slowly. CCing :bjacob who knows more about this.
Sounds like the continuation of this discussion, https://groups.google.com/group/webgl-dev-list/browse_thread/thread/6e793998d5187af8 thanks for CCing me. Indeed, I would like a confirmation that Firefox really runs at all on this device. That would mean that a _different_ bug than bug 771774 is at hand. In that case the next step would be to try to reproduce ourselves (we have relatively similar hardware in the Toronto office).
QA Triage Comment Need-info re: comment #1. Do we want to dupe this to bug 771774, or track this?

If Firefox runs on this device, then this is not a dupe of bug 771774. If tracking is needed, it needs to be tracked separately.
(In reply to Benoit Jacob [:bjacob] from comment #4) > If Firefox runs on this device, then this is not a dupe of bug 771774. If > tracking is needed, it needs to be tracked separately. Yes, it runs, passes if (!window.WebGLRenderingContext){ alert(err+"WebGL. See http://get.webgl.org"); return;} try { gl = c.getContext("experimental-webgl"); } catch(e) {} if ( !gl ) {alert("Can't get WebGL"); return;} and I see "Can't get WebGL" in console. 1. In Opera WebGL works only online (on a remote server?) 2. 3D molecular viewer NDKmol works fine, so OpenGL ES 2 is working too? 3. shall I try more simple context?

If you have the Android SDK installed, it would be interesting to know if there is any interesting message in adb logcat You could also try passing {antialias: false} to getContext.
(In reply to Benoit Jacob [:bjacob] from comment #6) > If you have the Android SDK installed, it would be interesting to know if > there is any interesting message in > > adb logcat > I'll try > You could also try passing {antialias: false} to getContext. try { gl = canvas.getContext("experimental-webgl", {antialias: false}); } catch(e) {} if ( !gl ) {alert("Can't get WebGL"); return;} doesn't help me - "Can't get WebGL" by the way WebGL really works in Opera 12 locally (I forgot to add matrix library. It is difficult to debug scripts without Error Console)
I've got (in Android CatLog application): GeckoConsole: JavaScriptWarning"Error: WebGL: GL error 0x501 occurred during OpenGL context initialization, before WebGL initialization... GeckoConsole: JavaScriptWarning"Error: WebGL: Error during OpenGL initialization... 2 times. Is it enough?
I used (in sequence) try { gl = c.getContext("experimental-webgl", {antialias: false, depth: false, alpha: false, premultipliedAlpha: false, preserveDrawingBuffer: true }); in all cases I've got "Can't get WebGL" (gl == null). In the last (full) case I've got again error 0x501
Ah, that is very interesting information. Now we need to understand what exactly is causing this error. But it's going to require that a Firefox developer reproduces this is GDB with a debug build and this environment variable set: MOZ_GL_DEBUG_ABORT_ON_ERROR. Let me know if you already know how to build Firefox/Android. Otherwise we'll try to do it when we have time (right now it's a busy week for me).
We have completed our launch of our new Firefox on Android. The development of the new versions use GitHub for issue tracking. If the bug report still reproduces in a current version of [Firefox on Android nightly](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.mozilla.fenix) an issue can be reported at the [Fenix GitHub project](https://github.com/mozilla-mobile/fenix/).
