If I want to access a resource on our Intranet I'd only have to type
http://<servername> in IE 4. IE automatically completes the <domain name>.<com>
part on your behalf. The net effect is that you can type the short server name
and are Ok.
Typing only the name in Mozilla 0.9 gives a "Cannot Locate host". Typing the
fully qualified URI in Mozilla brings up the page correctly.

er.. sounds like you should set your OS'es DNS search path accordingly...
XP apps? Should we try to fill in the domain of the host we are running on if
the OS is misconfigured like this?
qa to me. (I have noticed something similar with some of my systems...)
Can we get an example URL that works (in mozilla+IE) and one that does not
(should work in mozilla, but works only in IE).
Also, the info from your DNS configuration tab.
When you say: "IE automatically completes the <domain name>.<com>
part on your behalf.", which domain do you mean (NT domain or DNS)?

I think that the poster is refering to IE trick that when you put and url
without the .TLD, automatically tries combinations of commond .TLD for response.
Poster could you give us more info.

Don't know why summited it twice, sorry for any inconvenience
I'm not referring to put the TLD (.com, .org or whatever). What I'm referring
is that (hostname is strictly the NT the machine name)
1- http://hostname/ works in IE. IE does not rewrite the URL
2- http://hostname works in IE. IE puts the <company domain>.<com> after that.
3- http://hostname.<company domain>.<com> works in IE
(3) is the only one that works in Mozilla 0.9. Yes, I know that 0.9.1 is out bu
I've not tried it.
I tried that in Mozilla 0.9 for Win98, and it works...
<system>.pacbell.net is my system's name.
http://public -> brings up the same page as http://public.pacbell.net...
Is this the behavior you are looking for?
Reporter: mozilla0.9.2 is out please try and see if the bug still exists.

barbolani@mixmail.com, does your OS's DNS search path include the domain in
question?

Yes, it is.
Actually, I've found what really IE does when you type http://<machine> (only
the machine name). If fails the same as Mozilla!!!. When you retype the address
in the form http://<machine>.<rest of domain> it works as Mozilla. The
difference is that the next time you type the http://<machine>, IE uses the
<machine>.<rest of domain> that remembers (note: it is not that the name is
beign "autocompleted", you only see the <machine name> before pressing enter in
the URL box). At least this is the behaviour I've observed on a freshly
installed IE. Clearing the cache and history in IE does not seem make it
"forget" to add the <rest of domain> the next time.

That sounds more like an IE bug. I'm marking this invalid as, mozilla doesn't
implement autocomplete that way.

barbolani:
Before I verify, what hostname was not working (what was the full name)?
I think what you really wanted is proposed in bug 88217, where you can set the
browser to take incomplete hostnames and map them to something you want.
Depends on: 88217
You need to log in
before you can comment on or make changes to this bug.
