(Whiteboard: [type:feature])
As a community manager, I want to search for users by username or email address, so that I can correlate them with other points of contact, such as Mozillians.org.

Janet and I talked about this yesterday. For anyone else coming across this, it is possible for admins to do this now using the Django admin panel. But we still might want a good user-facing interface for this. I will move forward on that assumption.

A public-facing feature to search for users seems like a privacy issue; seems like Admin would be the best place to keep this.

Searching on email addresses would be a privacy issue, but usernames and profiles are public. User profiles should be one of the facets of on-site search.
Summary: Ability to search for users by username or email address → Ability to search for users

When discussing adding topic filters to MDN search, we also talked about searching for user profiles in a similar way. The command for entering a filter in our prototype is "#". We discussed how starting a username search with "@" will allow you to search for user profiles. We would also need to consider how to represent this on the search results page. We sketched out how the interaction could work, but I can also mock it up in some wireframes if this is something we would like to move forward with.

So this is about using the existing search UX to search for articles and other contributions by that user? As well as their profile?

My original use case was just looking for their profile. Searching for articles they've touched could be useful (since it might be tedious to go through all of their revisions), but that probably should be a separate feature request.
