We're planning a set of hack day/celebrations in ~20 locales around the world to rally developers - and inspire them to build apps for Firefox OS. These will all taking place in late January within a ~week as part of the ramp-up to MWC. Wiki here (needs some updating): https://wiki.mozilla.org/Engagement/Developer_Engagement/FirefoxOSAppsv2/JanuaryEvent We've already started shooting video, and we need to create some schwag and assets to support the effort, so want to be sure we've got the name right and guidance on how to use it in print w/the FxOS wordmark (i've got the wordmark file) BTW, Firefox OS 1000 Apps Party name has blessing from Stormy and Rick Fant, and I like the fact that it should localize well -- "1000 Apps" is pretty well understood across many languages :) TIA Matej, Mart3ll, Tara!

Hi all. I'd like to get some more context around this name, how it was chosen and what you'd like it to communicate. I agree that "1000 apps" is probably easy to localize, but I'm wondering where the 1000 comes from. I like that it's big and aspirational, but is there any potential for it to backfire if we don't actually get to that number? I'm also not sure if "party" is the right word to attach to something like this. Is that a common name for these kinds of events? Is it something that developers react well to? I worry that it doesn't make it sound serious enough and that it may not translate well. I would recommend keeping it as short as possible. It seems like "Firefox OS" and "apps" are mandatory, so maybe it could be as simple as one of the following: Firefox OS App Days Firefox OS App Sprint Firefox OS App Spree Firefox OS Apps Build-off Firefox OS Apps Rally Firefox OS Apps Fest I'm happy to come up with some more options if you like, but a little more information would be helpful.
Hey Matej, I really like "Firefox OS App Days" -- thank you! As (almost) always, simplicity rulez. And, I just ran it by Mark C (our R Accountable SCI) -- he likes it too. Let's move forward with that. (The backgrounder on 1000 Apps is that it's associated with a goal -- not the goal of this program -- but a longer term goal for Developer app submissions) and then I started riffing on "Let 1000 Apps bloom..." There's also a rationale about Party vs Hack Day, but I'll spare you the torrid history because I think "Days" is best. ) I think we could use your help with a tagline / 10 word description of what these events are meant to be. Goals are here: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Engagement/Developer_Engagement/FirefoxOSAppsv2/JanuaryEvent#Goals Happy to jump on Skype to talk through some of this if that makes most sense. Unless anyone objects, we'll move forward w/Firefox OS App Days
Would one of these work? Firefox OS App Days Learn how to build apps using the tools of the Web. Firefox OS App Days Help us bring the Open Web to mobile devices. Firefox OS App Days Unlock the power of the Open Web. Firefox OS App Days Build and hack on apps for the Firefox Marketplace. Firefox OS App Days Be among the first to get your app in the Firefox Marketplace.
Matej - thanks, awesome! Here are the ones that resonate best for me w/the aims of the event -- note I've made some tweaks to a couple of them. We want to keep the overall branding focused on FxOS, rather than FF Marketplace: 1 - Help bring the Open Web to mobile devices. (lose the 'us' - i think it's implied in the FxOS branding) - actually I think the mobile focus is important 2- Build and hack on apps for the Firefox OS. 3- Unlock the power of the Open Web. What about "Mobilize the power of the Open Web." We'd like to lock this down before end of November, so we can march forward w/creative.

One more TIMELY bit: one of the key development tools for the Firefox OS App Days is a browser add-on Myk developed that's now supported by a small team of devs w/ Kevin Dangoor as PM. Myk named it R2D2B2G and then it was unofficially 'rebranded' Firefox OS Simulator. Kevin blogged about it here last week, and then we all realized it'd never actually run it by brand. Plan is to blog again on Hacks in support of using it at Mozcamp this weekend. Would love to make it official - I think Kevin reached out to Pete, but if there's a shortcut for getting this done via bugzilla & you, pls let me know. Otherwise, we can default back to B2G Simulator.... Deets are here: http://www.blueskyonmars.com/2012/11/08/r2d2b2g-is-becoming-the-firefox-os-simulator/ and here: https://github.com/mykmelez/r2d2b2g

I think mobilize might not be as clear or descriptive to someone seeing it for the first time, but it does have a good actionable quality. If other people are digging, I'm OK with it, I just don't think it's as strong as some of the others. For 2, it should be "Build and hack on apps for Firefox OS" instead of "the Firefox OS." As for comment 5, Firefox OS Simulator sounds OK to me, but there are some brand considerations and sensitivities around referring to early builds as Firefox OS. That should definitely go through Pete and maybe even Beard. Thanks for checking.
