Extension name: QuickText Extension UUID: {8845e3b3-e8fb-40e2-95e9-ec40294818c4} Extension versions to block: 0.9.11.1 Applications, versions, and platforms affected affected: 17.0* Block severity: hard Homepage, AMO listing, other references and contact info: http://extensions.hesslow.se/, author cc'ed Reasons: Bug 785370 - this extension is causing cycle collection crashes in Thunderbird 17 when composing emails, making it unusable for the users with the add-on. This is by far the top crash for Thunderbird in the first few hours after release with > 6k crashes. Bug 785370 has been open for a couple of months, but we've not found the cause, and the extension author has been cc'ed to it as far as we know but not made any comments yet. We will continue to try and resolve the cause of the crash, but we're not going to be able to do anything for the users with this version combination installed.
> Extension versions to block: 0.9.11.1 should be > Extension versions to block: 0.9.11.1, 0.9.11.3 (the latter is available on the author's web site)
This is a compatibility problem that appeared in Thunderbird 17, correct?
Yes, this has only appeared in Thunderbird 17. It doesn't seem to be to do with specific interfaces necessarily, more something that is triggering a crash in the garbage/cycle collector.
Quicktext 0.9.11.3 that is available on my website have maxVersion 10.0.a2. Quicktext 0.9.11.1 that is available on AMO I never set compatible with Thunderbird 17. And looking at AMO it say: "Works with Thunderbird 5.0b2pre - 12.*" So I guess Thunderbird don't care about maxVersion anymore. I suppose that happen because you are now bumping the version of Thunderbird so often so it would mean that extension would stop working all the time if you cared about maxVersion.
Add-ons are compatible by default now, so there's no need for version bumping. I added all existing versions of Quicktext to the compatibility override list, so that it appears as incompatible with Thunderbird 17 and above. This works better than blocklisting in this case.

In the future I suggest that you add incompatible extensions to that list before a new version of Thunderbird is released. It have been known for more than 3 months that Quicktext isn't compatible with Thunderbird 17 so it can't been a surprise that Thunderbird start crashing for people when Thunderbird 17 was released.
0.9.11.5 is now released on AMO and that fixes the crash bug.
Thank you, Emil.
still lots of crashes - last 24 hours is 2,664 crashes. But, that's a mere 15% of what it had been.
Wanye: Those crashes do they have the old version of Quicktext installed? Or could it be some other extension that is doing the same thing as I did?
(In reply to Emil Hesslow from comment #10) > Wanye: Those crashes do they have the old version of Quicktext installed? Or > could it be some other extension that is doing the same thing as I did? The examples I am seeing are all the old version. So for some reason the reporter has neither picked up the extension block nor the new version. Eexamples installed on 11-21 and crash 11-23 or 11-24 bp-dec83585-ce6e-4e96-9e24-89ac62121123 bp-01143f97-6285-4ef1-b831-f157a2121124 bp-07371665-d8f2-40e7-8a64-790fc2121123 bp-512d39f3-4573-4e8a-b00c-810bc2121123 installed 11-24 crashed 11-24 bp-a185d1a9-756b-4f2a-82d4-44d4c2121124 (multiple crashes) Is blocklist or addons update list checked on startup if the user crashed? That might be something nice to do for the user.
