User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:17.0) Gecko/17.0 Firefox/17.0
Build ID: 20121119183901

Steps to reproduce:

Open any web page... for example: http://www.wired.com/wiredenterprise/2012/11/how-the-hp-way-screwed-hp/

Actual results:

Some of the text on the page is rendered with fuzzy or poor anti-aliasing. The text becomes sharper after about 10 seconds.

Expected results:

Text should be clearly rendered immediately upon load.
Summary: Text rendering fault / Fuzzy font → Text rendering fault / Fuzzy font / Poor anti-aliasing upon load
If you go to about:config and set gfx.content.azure.enabled to false, then restart the browser, does this affect the issue?
Alternatively, if you disable hardware acceleration (in the Options dialog, Advanced/General panel), and restart, does the problem still occur?
Setting gfx.content.azure.enabled to false appears to fix this issue.
Please go to about:support, press "Copy text to clipboard", and paste here so we can see details of your configuration - thanks.

Thanks. Bas, any idea about this? It looks like when azure content is enabled, he's getting garbled glyphs misaligned compositing or something, but only in a certain portion of the screen.
The portion of screen affected varies between pages. The effect is temporary, and can come and go at any time. Highlighting affected text sharpens it. Mouse-over's can trigger regression.
I cannot reproduce this useing the latest Nightly.
(In reply to Gabriela from comment #8)
> I cannot reproduce this useing the latest Nightly.
I confirm.
I was seeing this, but I suspect it was either a problem with my profile, or an add-on compatibility issue. Hitting the "Reset Nightly" button on about:support appears to have sorted it out completely.

(I had Firebug, DoNotTrack Plus, HTTPS Everywhere, Custom Standalone Image Backgrounds, Chatzilla, Firefox OS Simulator 0.8, latest PDF.js from Github. So far I've only reinstalled the latter two.)
It seems I spoke too soon. The page I'm seeing it is http://dirt.mpora.com/news/bonkers-audi-electric-bike.html

Scrolling sometimes seems to trigger it. It doesn't affect all the text, and it isn't always the same text. Drag-selecting the affected text fixes it, as does switching to another tab and back. Toggling gfx.content.azure.enabled to false fixes the problem.

Here's my about:support:

The problem of original reporter looks like bug 814101.
(In reply to Alice0775 White from comment #12)
> The problem of original reporter looks like bug 814101.

No, this looks like a graphics/layers/compositing problem affecting only some apparently-arbitrary regions of the screen; that bug was about incorrect antialiasing affecting fonts/text runs as a whole.

Confirming this, as it's clearly affecting a number of people (though it may turn out to be a driver-dependent issue or something like that).
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Component: Untriaged → Graphics
Ever confirmed: true
Product: Firefox → Core
We need to be able to reproduce this bug on a developer's machine.
Is it possible that you've got a Flash instance in that same rectangle? George says he's seen that happen before.
(By that, I mean Flash in a background tab.)
I don't think this is the problem, no. I broke a tab out to a separate window and moved it to my second monitor, ie, it was the only Firefox window or tab in that area and it still happened.
I have this exact same problem, both on my home computer and my work laptop. On the work laptop, I was on FF16, and only started to see the problem after upgrading to 17 and then 18 (I was a few months behind). I've had the problem for longer on the desktop machine, presumably because I upgraded to 17 in a timely fashion.

The issue is as described by the reporter, parts of text on random screens will occasionally garble, and be fixed if you highlight them or refresh the page.

Both machines are using ATI graphics, if that could be a common denominator. I just updated the drivers on the laptop to see if it would help, and it didn't.
Another note, since it just happened again. Waiting 10 seconds doesn't fix it for me. And on a message board, there was some garbled text that spanned some normal words then some bold words. I highlighted one of the normal words and they all rendered normally, but the bold ones didn't repair, so the text may be corrupting on an element-by-element basis (the garbling was sort of on both ends of the tag boundary there, last couple non-bold words and first bold word). Switching to another tab and then back fixed all of the text.
And now I can reproduce it by hovering comments on youtube. On mouseover, when the thumbs darken and the corner arrow appears, or mouseout, the text garbles. First couple lines of any paragraph. Can highlight to fix, but mousing away makes it return. I can do this on basically any youtube video page right now actually (using the HTML5 player).

(Sorry for the sequential posts.)
What's the exact version of Firefox you're running, and the version of your AMD Radeon drivers?
FF18.0

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series
-Catalyst 12.6
-2D driver 8.01.01.1248
-Direct 3D 7.14.10.0911
-OpenGL 6.14.10.11653
I'm going to try and get hold of a machine with a Mobility HD 4200 series, but before then can you provide a screenshot of the results you're seeing?
Sure, just attached one. It wasn't happening when I hovered the first couple comments, but then I scrolled down and it started to work. So you may have to futz around on the page a little.
I also attached a screen shot to bug 823020. I will see what graphics card the machine that I see the behaviour on has in the morning.
Graphics section shows in comment #5 and Comment #11.

It seems to duplication of bug Bug 812695.
That bug suggests that IE10 causes the issue and I did install IE10 recently.
I cannot reproduce this on any of my Windows systems. :(
My machine is also using an ATI device, an ATI Radeon HD 3400 Series, driver version: 8.762.0.0.
For some reason the following page is particularly bad. Usually when I select text it goes normal, but on this page no matter what I do the first paragraph is always fuzzy.

http://www.expertafrica.com/mozambique/info/weather-and-climate
I, too, had the same problem as depicted in the original screenshots when I upgraded to FF 18.0.1. So, I downgraded to 17.0.1, and still had the problem. I'm now back at FF 16.0.2 where I started, and the problem is gone. For the record, I, too, have an ATI device, an ATI Radeon HD 3600 series.
Can anyone else confirm whether they have IE10 installed?
I have IE 10 installed. But, as I mentioned, FF 16.0.2 is unaffected, at least on my system. Only FF beyond 16.0.2 seems to be affected in my case.
I have indeed got IE10 installed on the system in Comment 11.

No such issue using the latest Beta and Windows 7 64 bit.
Yes, I have the problem and I have IE10 installed.
(In reply to Jamie Kitson from comment #33)
> Can anyone else confirm whether they have IE10 installed?

I don't have IE10 but IE 9.

I don't see the issue in http://www.expertafrica.com/mozambique/info/weather-and-climate using the latest Beta (Firefox 19 b3), today's Nightly and Windows 7 64 bit.
Maybe try installing IE10?
The Platform Update (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35661) should be enough to see if this is related to/Dupe of Bug 812695.

No Need to install MSIE 10 (see also Bug 812695 Comment 4).
(In reply to Jamie Kitson from comment #39)
> Maybe try installing IE10?

I'm sorry but it seems there is only a IE10 Preview for Windows 7? What if install it and, being a preview, it doesn't work correctly?

I'm sorry but Platform Update for Windows 7 (PRE-RELEASE version) is obviously a pre-release version. As I asked before: what if install it and, being a pre-release version, it doesn't work correctly?
A bit more info: I only see this on my main monitor when Firefox is maximised. Not on my second monitor at all and not when it's not maximised on my main monitor. My two monitors are both connected to a single DVI (I think) output on the ATI card via a DVI to two VGA splitter cable. My main monitor is in a portrait resolution of 1050x1680. I also see this issue commonly on pages on http://www.theregister.co.uk/
Setting gfx.content.azure.backends;cairo as suggested in bug 812695 has fixed the issue for me, therefore I suggest that they are the same bug.

The above site looks fine using Nightly and Windows 7 32 bit.
Gabriela it seems pointless you commenting on this bug, you obviously don't see the issue, you apparently haven't tried installing IE10 or the platform update and you may not even have an affected chipset.

I'm sorry, I'd thought my comments were useful, that's why I made them!
I won't install IE10 because it's only a preview nor the plataform update because it's a pre-release version and I doubt very much about their correct performance.

As you don't seem to find my comments useful, don't worry, you won't hear fro me again.
This is a Duplicate of Bug 812695.
Updated from IE10 preview to IE10 RC today, it did not resolve the issue (dang).
Cannot reproduce after setting gfx.content.azure.enabled to false. Happened very frequently ( >50% of webpages) before changing gfx.content.azure.enabled.

Hi,

I have the same problem, and the Expert Africa page shows the problem on it's logo and text. If I move around or select some text, the affected area changes too.
I see the problem maximized or not.
Comment 7 describes the problem perfectly for me.

Has any solution been found so far? Please let me know.
Thanks!

Finally decided to try upgrading again; so, a little while ago, I upgraded from FF 16.0.2 to 20.0.1. The problem appears to be fixed.
21.0 is still showing this issue for me.
Plus the bug that this duplicates, 812695, is not fixed.
