Unable to cancel update when warned about an incompatible add-on

Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0
Build ID: 20121024073032
Steps to reproduce:
Im running firefox 16.0.2 with "Automated updates: on" and "Warn me, if an addon will be deactivated because the update" checked.
I did update to Firefox 17
Actual results:
While updating I was warned that an plugin will be deactivated because it is not compatible with firefox 17. I had no choice to stop the update process to prevent the deactivation of the plugin.
Afterwards there was no way to restore firefox 16.0.2. to let the Addon work again.
Expected results:
If an addon is not compatible with the update an will be deactivated - as the warning already tells - I expect to have the choice to prevent from this update.
I had told the problem with https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=814018 but as the title apparently not fits the case I close this bug and reopen it with the better title.

Component: Untriaged → Application Update
Product: Firefox → Toolkit
Not a good solution, because some users will be stay stuck to an old version with bugs and security issues, only because they want to keep an incompatible add-on. The main application is Firefox, not the add-ons.
Just disable the add-on compatibility checking (see https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/checkcompatibility/), it's enough and at your own risks as power user.

But if I decide to stay stuck it is my decision. And it's up to me - not to anyone else.

The main reason to use Firefox is it's flexibility through add-ons. If there where no add-ons Firefox would have been known and used only by a handful of geeks.

Then I simply don't know that the add-on does not work - until I notice it (probably by crashing my Firefox at the most unwanted moment).
How should that help, in your opinion ( in case the addon works with the latest update)?
The way it works now I'll have to disable 'Automated updates' - and that is indeed no good idea.

Specifically, why weren't you able to cancel the update? There is the [X] in the upper right for example.

I did use the X in the upper right corner but it did not prevent firefox from updating. It closed the warning dialog but firefox updated to V 17.

The app update add-on compatibility check will be removed in bug 1262880
