Steps to reproduce:

It would be nice if Chatzilla had built-in support for something like <http://scripts.irssi.org/html/trackbar.pl.html> in irssi.

That is:
Whenever you switch away from a tab, remove the previous marker (if any), and draw a new marker (a horizontal line) at the bottom of the message window.

Effect:
When you switch back to a channel/query, you can immediately see which messages are new/unread (those below the marker).
I agree, it should be automagic, but I have an alias I use when I want to place a mark in a window:

/alias MARK echo . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Simple, but it works.
