I can't find an option to explicitly declare a custom field to be numeric (in my case, an integer).

The most important effect of such a declaration would be to have a numerical sort order (1, 7, 10 instead of 1, 10, 7). Personally, I would use this to implement a column I can sort a Scrum backlog on (so I can reorder bugs as desired).

It would probably useful, though, to allow specifying min/max values or even the allowed number of fraction digits.
Patch was provided in the duplicate bug, and it was rejected.
