Thunderbird's autoconfiguration mechanism will try guessing sub-domain names like 'mail' or 'imap' and 'smtp'. We could do this too.

Just got a good example of this causing issues on dev-b2g where office365.com works on Thunderbird but not Gaia. There is no ISP database entry for office365.com and the MX lookup doesn't do anything for us. Thunderbird guesses mail.office365.com and tries it and then succeeds.

I would have expected office365.com to use ActiveSync and let us figure this out via Autodiscovery. Do we know why that's not working?
