Build: B2G 18 1/12/2013 Device: Unagi Prerequiste: Flash an old build Steps: 1. Install a packaged app 2. Update the app on the server 3. Check for updates (manual or automatic) 4. Select the updates notification Expected: The user should be able to select which update he or she would like to apply. Actual: It's impossible to apply a 3rd party app update without also applying the system update. This is kinda sorta annoying to force the user path here, even though I understand this is an attempt to ensure are users are running latest builds.
I do understand this was originally intended by UX, but this takes the word annoying too far. Noming for tracking. Definitely doesn't block though.

Josh - please re-nominate if this is something you think we should fix in the v1 timeframe (seems to be by design)

Was by design for v1, although it was the product of compromises and is not anyone's idea of an optimal solution. We're tracking updates for improvement in future versions.

FWIW, I agree with Jason on this... this is annoying to the extreme. And we're even more radical than Apple here... I can choose not to apply new iOS updates when they come out and still get my apps updated (for the most part anyway). Having timely updates is a good thing. Forcing people to apply the updates, or else..., it's not.
One thing to bear in mind is that for end users the frequency of updates will probably be very low. As in a few times a year. In which case we do want an approach that emphasizes the importance of the new update.

As the current aries dogfood OTA is broken, people are advised to not update. However, this means that also cannot update their apps unless they also partially download the system update. Since this only really affects foxfooding, I think it'd be great if for foxfooding builds there was a developer option to not require system updates.
Hey UX people, what do you think of this old bug ? I think the rationale was good for users on a stable channel, but maybe not for users on a nightly or dogfood channel.

From UX triage: Yes, we think that this is a good feature addition, though will need a bit of design work. Adding the uiwanted tag for us. Thanks for pinging the UX team!
