Running Gaia Profiles with custom GAIA_PORT in B2G Desktop fails

Details
When building a GAIA profile using DEBUG=1 make and then launching B2G desktop with ./b2g-bin -profile /home/username/gaia/profile everything works as expected.
When one builds a Gaia profile using DEBUG=1 GAIA_PORT=:8190 however, and then run B2G desktop as above, the app launches but freezes at a black screen with the Mozilla wording bottom right. The output to the terminal is the same in both cases.
In the first case I do not have anything specific in my hosts file but, just to make doubly sure, when running over the custom port I add the following to this file: https://gist.github.com/fc5c8a118be3d7bbc8c1
This presents a problem for a user which has a process already bound to port 8080 and thus wished to have the local server for Gaia run on a different port.
