1. Open editor (composer, IM, Chat, etc.)
2. Type text and insert an Smiley (from menu) in the middle of the text
(For composer: insert 
aaa<span -moz-smiley="s1"><span>:-)</span></span>bbb 
into source window and switch to Normal view )

3. Select all and format it with Bold (or Italic, or underline)

Smiley disappeared.
Reason for that: text formatting deletes all <span> elements.
