Mozilla's UI hangs when subscribing to several (~>5) newsgroups

Mozilla hangs for extended (possibly indefinite -- I haven't tested fully)
amounts of time when subscribing to reasonably large numbers of groups from my
local news group feed via the leafnode
news server/proxy.
A small number of groups (say five) is fine, however when I subscribe to
further groups, and I attempt to switch between the groups to read the
messages, the UI just freezes. It doesn't crash/sefault/core dump or anything.
Eventually I have to kill off the process.
I don't know whether Mozilla dislikes being fed news via leafnode -- I haven't
tried directly connecting to my ISP's news server. I don't know whether this is
Linux only.
CC'ing: asa as requested
Mine doesn't hang using Collabra 3.52 as the server with RedHat 7.0 2.2.16-22smp
using 2001-05-31-08 on news.mozilla.org to subscribe to 7 groups, and switching
between them doesn't freeze the UI. Quite possible this is unique to leafnode.
Can you tell us what version of leafnode you are using, as well as your Mozilla
build ID, along with linux distro version, kernel version, and lastly, can you
try your ISP's news server, to see if we can narrow it down to leafnode? Thanks.

Build 2001-05-31-08: Linux RH 6.2
It works for me using Collabra 3.52 as the server with one news server
subscribed to 6 newsgroups. My experience is simlar to Stephen's.

OK. The system details are as follows:
Mozilla 2001053108 (also seen with 0.9 though)
Leafnode 1.9.18 (which I think is the latest, or close to it)
The distribution is Debian GNU/Linux 2.2r2 (potato), which has been fairly
heavily upgraded by myself by compiling various bits.
The kernel is 2.4.5, although since I saw the problem with 0.9, that must have
been with about kernel 2.4.4 since I don't think 2.4.5 was released then....
I'm also running XFree86 4.0.3.
I'll have a go with news.mozilla.org as my news server...
Thanks :)

Can't seem to reproduce the hange when using news.mozilla.org.
So looks like it's a leafnode issue.
However I can't seem to load any message bodies from news.mozilla.org from the
build. Don't know if it's me doing anything stupid...
The messages are there, and the from and subject load, I just don't see anything
in the body. I can see the message text if I view the message source...
I've stuck a screenshot here. http://chrishowells.co.uk/stuff/mozilla.png

Mozilla just sits there consuming CPU time during the hang. From 'top':
PID USER PRI NI SIZE RSS SHARE STAT LIB %CPU %MEM TIME COMMAND

I wonder if this is the same as http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39183 ?
Probably the same root cause.
Confirming, 2 reports are good enough for me. *this bug, + the other bug*. If
you're fine with this being a DUP, I might mark the other a dup of this, since
yours seems to have updated, more relevant info than the other bug.

I think it probably is the same.
The other bug seemed to be related to some JS problem or similair. Personally I
can't really understand how leafnode could cause such a problem, but then again,
I don't know the code ;)
I've tried running Mozilla from the terminal to try and catch anything going out
of STDOUT or STDERR, although unfortunately those messages seem to have been cut
down upon -- I don't get any errors at all, just the normal output messages
about having changed mailboxes, etc.
I hope it gets fixed soon -- the only thing stopping me using Mozilla is this
bug :)

I noticed Mozilla hanging 2001-11-12 w2K builds when subscribing to newsgroups..
I tried adding more than 5 also. I noticed this problem when creating a new
profile, but not when copying prefs.js and my News Folder to the new profile.

I tried adding more than 5 also. I noticed this problem when creating a new
profile, but not when copying prefs.js and my News Folder to the new profile. I
had done a new W2K format/install, and 11-12 is my first Mozilla build I
installed on my newer HD.

subscribing to 1 newsgroup in 2001-11-12 W2K hangs mozilla.. maybe someone
changed the code to get messages for newsgroups, dont know how far back this
goes.. will start looking.

I just deleted my prefs.js file for 2001-11-12-03 build and resubscribed to
newsgroups with just 1 newsgroup. and no hang.. Maybe this is related to using
old News Folder and an old prefs.js file. So invalidating my own statement
about a clean install is not working in comment #10, and comment #11.. tried > 6
and it worked also so invalidating comment #12..
I'd say wfm in 2001-11-12 W2K now. This bug could be a residual side effect
problem. Again, I have created a new W2K install, and Mozilla is the first
install ed app. BTW, FYI, I also added clean netscape 6.2.
Dennis, are you using Leafnode?
